If you’re starting to spend more time on a paddleboard, learning how to stay safe and handle unexpected situations makes a big difference. This one-day SUP safety course is designed to give you practical tools to look after yourself and others while out on sheltered water.
Starting on land, you’ll go through a simple breakdown of your paddleboard equipment and how everything works together to keep you safe on the water. Your instructor will guide you through key safety concepts before moving into practical paddling, helping you understand how your board behaves in different conditions. Everything is kept clear and accessible, so you can build confidence from the very beginning.
Once you’re on the water, the focus shifts to awareness, control, and decision-making. You’ll explore how weather, wind, and environment affect your paddling, along with what to do if things don’t go to plan. The session is based around real-world scenarios, helping you develop simple, practical strategies to stay safe and enjoy your time on the water with more confidence.
Sessions are based around Whitewave in Linicro, just outside Portree, giving access to a range of sheltered waters suitable for SUP training. This allows the session to be adapted depending on conditions, ensuring a safe and effective learning environment.
The exact meeting point will be confirmed a day or two before your course, usually somewhere around the Trotternish peninsula. Skye roads can get busy during peak times, so it’s worth allowing extra travel time to avoid rushing your start.
Some previous paddleboarding experience in sheltered water is required, as you’ll already need to be comfortable standing, paddling, and controlling your board. This course is aimed at those who are still building confidence rather than complete beginners.
It’s ideal if you want to improve your understanding of safety, planning, and decision-making on a paddleboard. The focus is on giving you simple, practical skills that help you feel more secure every time you head out.
With a strong background in paddlesports across Scotland and beyond, the team focuses on building real-world confidence through hands-on learning. Sessions are structured to be supportive and practical, helping you make better decisions on the water without overcomplicating things.
Cam and Izzy bring experience from a range of environments, including coastal and inland waters, and tailor their teaching to suit different abilities. Their approach is straightforward and encouraging, making it easier to understand safety concepts and apply them when you’re out paddling.
This course is designed for paddlers who already have some experience on a paddleboard in sheltered water. You should be comfortable standing, paddling, and controlling your board before joining.
It’s not a beginner introduction, but more of a next step to build safety, awareness and confidence. The focus is on helping you feel more secure when you head out on your own or with friends.
The course runs for around 7 hours in total, including time both on land and on the water. This gives plenty of time to cover key safety topics and practise skills without feeling rushed.
It’s structured to keep things focused and practical, with a balance of theory and hands-on learning throughout the day.
You’ll cover key areas such as equipment setup, weather awareness, planning, and general safety on the water. Each topic is linked to real situations you’re likely to come across while paddleboarding.
The aim is to give you simple tools and strategies that help you make better decisions when you’re out on your board.
No, all equipment is provided, including paddleboards, paddles, and safety gear. You’ll also be given guidance on how to use everything properly as part of the session.
If you already have your own kit, you’re welcome to discuss using it during the course so you can learn in a setup that matches what you normally use.
If you have a wetsuit, feel free to bring it along, otherwise we can bring one for you. Drysuits may also be suitable if water temperatures are low.
It’s also a good idea to bring a towel, spare clothes, and something warm for afterwards. Conditions can change quickly on Skye, so layers are always useful.
Yes, there may be some time spent in the water as part of practising safety and recovery techniques. This is done in a controlled way and always in sheltered conditions.
Wetsuits and buoyancy aids are provided, so you’ll be kept comfortable throughout the session.
You’ll meet somewhere around Whitewave in Linicro, near Portree, but the exact meeting point will be confirmed a day or two before your course. This allows the best sheltered location to be chosen based on conditions.
Most sessions take place around the Trotternish peninsula. Travel on Skye can take longer than expected, especially in busy periods, so it’s best to allow extra time.
