Head out across frozen wilderness trails by snowmobile before slowing things down on a peaceful ice fishing stop in the middle of a quiet Arctic lake. This mix of movement and stillness gives you a real feel for winter life in Lapland, ending with a warm meal by the fire.
The day begins with a transfer from your selected pick-up point into the forested outskirts of Rovaniemi, where winter gear is provided and instructions are given before setting off. Once ready, the snowmobile ride starts, following marked trails through snowy woodland and open frozen terrain, with time to switch drivers if sharing.
After reaching a remote frozen lake, the pace changes as you step into ice fishing. Holes are drilled into the ice and guidance is given on traditional techniques used in Lapland. While waiting for a bite, the surroundings are quiet and open, with wide views across the snow-covered landscape.
If the fish are not biting, the experience continues around a campfire where a BBQ is prepared. Warm food and drinks are served before the return journey by snowmobile back through the winter scenery to the starting point.
The experience takes place in the wider Rovaniemi area, with travel into forest zones and frozen lakes just outside the city. These locations are chosen for their reliable winter conditions, open spaces, and natural surroundings that suit both snowmobiling and ice fishing.
Rovaniemi sits within the Arctic Circle, meaning long winter seasons and consistent snow cover. The route passes through forest tracks and open lake areas where wildlife sightings are possible and the environment feels noticeably remote from the city.
A valid car driving licence is required for anyone driving a snowmobile. Drivers must be 18 or over and comfortable handling a motor vehicle in winter conditions. Children can join depending on height restrictions, with specific seating arrangements applied for safety.
No previous snowmobiling or ice fishing experience is needed. Warm clothing is provided, and guidance is given throughout so you can take part even if it’s your first time in this kind of environment.
This experience is designed to combine two very different sides of Arctic life in one outing, giving you time both in motion and at rest within the same setting. Routes are selected based on current snow and ice conditions to keep the experience smooth and practical.
Small group sizes help keep things straightforward and allow more time with your guide, whether you’re learning to handle a snowmobile or trying ice fishing for the first time. The focus is on making the most of the natural surroundings without rushing between activities.
No prior experience is needed for either snowmobiling or ice fishing. Before setting off, full instructions are given on how to operate the snowmobile safely, and your guide will stay nearby throughout the ride. The ice fishing section is also beginner-friendly, with equipment and guidance provided.
The activity is designed so that first-time participants can comfortably take part at their own pace. Whether you are driving or riding as a passenger, everything is explained clearly so you can focus on the experience rather than the technical side.
Ice fishing success can vary depending on conditions, so catching fish is not guaranteed. The experience is still designed to give you a traditional feel of the activity, including drilling the ice and learning the techniques used locally.
If no fish are caught, a campfire BBQ is prepared so you can still enjoy a full meal in the outdoor setting. This part of the experience often becomes a relaxed social moment around the fire.
Yes, the snowmobile section is suitable for beginners as long as driving requirements are met. A safety briefing is given before departure, covering controls, spacing, and trail rules.
The pace is controlled by the guide, and routes are chosen to suit mixed ability groups. You will not be expected to navigate or lead, as the guide sets the route throughout.
It is recommended to wear warm base layers such as thermal clothing, wool socks, and comfortable outdoor trousers. The provided winter suits are designed to be worn over your own layers for insulation.
Avoid cotton where possible, as it retains moisture. Gloves, hats, and scarves can be worn underneath or as additional layers depending on comfort.
