Join a legendary high mountain day on the Snowdon Horseshoe: grade 1 scrambling along the knife-edge of Crib Goch, a summit of Yr Wyddfa, and the classic traverse of Lliwedd. It is a long, committing semi-circle of rock and ridge, led by a qualified Mountain Leader who lives and works in these hills.
You start early from Pen y Pass and climb onto Crib Goch, where the ridge narrows and the scrambling begins in earnest. Hands and feet share the work as you move along the knife-edge, through the pinnacles, and onward toward Crib y Ddysgl and Garnedd Ugain with big drops either side when the cloud lifts.
From there the day continues over Yr Wyddfa, the highest point in Wales and England, before a careful descent toward the screes and the rising ground of Lliwedd. This is the ridge where early Himalayan climbers trained, and it still feels wild and serious even on a guided day.
You finish toward Llyn Llydaw and back toward Pen y Pass with a full horseshoe behind you. Your guide adapts pace and line to fitness and weather, keeping the group secure on the most exposed ground.
The Snowdon Horseshoe sits in the north-west of Eryri, on the south side of the Llanberis Pass where the A4086 climbs to Pen y Pass. From here the ridges form a near-perfect high-level circuit around the lakes and cwms below Yr Wyddfa.
It is one of the most famous mountain days in Britain: sharp volcanic rock, sudden drops into the valleys, and summit views that stretch across North Wales when the weather opens. The setting alone explains why people travel here for this single classic route.
You need excellent endurance fitness and confident movement on steep, rocky ground. Prior full mountain days help, and a head for heights makes the Crib Goch sections feel more manageable.
This is a rewarding but challenging day, not a first gentle scramble. If you are unsure, ask the team before you book so they can match you to a better first step.
Days are led by fully qualified Mountain Leaders or Mountaineering Instructors with deep local knowledge of the Snowdon massif. They live and work in these hills year round, so route and weather decisions stay grounded in real conditions.
Ratios stay at a maximum of 6 guests to 1 leader so coaching on the knife-edge stays personal. Kit guidance is clear and practical for the season, so you arrive ready for wet rock, wind, and a long day out.
Meet at Pen y Pass, check kit, and climb toward the first rocky steps of Crib Goch. Your leader briefs the day, sets an honest pace, and keeps the group tight as the ground steepens from hiking into scrambling.
Early ridge work builds confidence with hands-on movement while exposure increases. Clear coaching on footwork and balance helps everyone settle into the rhythm of a grade 1 mountain day.
Traverse the knife-edge and pinnacles, then continue over Crib y Ddysgl and Garnedd Ugain toward the summit of Yr Wyddfa. This is the high heart of the horseshoe, with airy positions and big mountain views when the cloud lifts.
Your guide chooses secure lines and rest stops matched to the group. Snacks, layers, and calm movement matter as much as fitness once you are fully committed to the ridge.
Descend carefully toward the screes, then climb and traverse Lliwedd before working back toward Llyn Llydaw and Pen y Pass. Tired legs and loose ground make this final third as important as the famous ridge at the start.
Back at the car park you debrief the day and leave with one of Snowdonia's classic ticks done properly under qualified guidance.
Meet at Pen y Pass car park on the Llanberis Pass. Between March and November, book parking online in advance for an early start, typically around 7am.
Exact timing and parking notes are confirmed in your joining instructions. Allow extra time on busy weekends, and bring card or cash for parking where required.
