Ten days sailing the island chain off the East African coast, departing and returning to Stone Town, Zanzibar. You sail aboard Synergy, our 40ft catamaran, with a skipper and first mate, in a group of just four. The route is shaped by wind, current and what the group wants, so you visit at least one island and perhaps two.
- Historic Stone Town: spice-scented alleys, carved doors and a harbour that rewards a second look.
- The Pemba Channel: nutrient-rich water, coral walls dropping to 300 metres and anchorages such as Vumawimbi beach.
- Mafia Island Marine Park: over 460 species of fish, nesting hawksbill and green turtles, and Chole Bay’s coral gardens.
- Every point of sail: from calm breezes to tighter close-hauled stretches.

Itinerary and what to expect (potential routings; the actual route follows weather and the group)
Day 1: Join the yacht in Stone Town in the afternoon for a full safety briefing and welcome aboard.
Option A, to Mafia: Depart Stone Town, round the north of Zanzibar and head south past the Songo Songo Archipelago, with its dhow-building villages and quiet anchorages, to Mafia Island Marine Park.
Option B, to Pemba: Thread north into the Pemba Channel for Pemba Island’s clove plantations, Ngezi forest and coral walls.
Final leg: Return to Stone Town from the north, past Tumbatu Island, to end among the spice market and dhow harbour.
No previous sailing experience is necessary to take part in this voyage. The trip is designed to accommodate all skill levels, from complete beginners to seasoned sailors. The experienced skipper and crew will provide full guidance and support throughout, ensuring you feel comfortable whether you want to get hands-on or simply enjoy the journey.
Accommodation is provided in double or twin cabins on the catamaran Synergy. Solo travellers will have their own cabin. Each cabin has storage space and access to shared bathrooms located in the hulls. Bedding and linens are supplied, so you just need to bring your personal belongings and a sense of adventure.
The boat offers comfortable communal areas including a shaded cockpit and a large foredeck, perfect for relaxing or socialising. Privacy is balanced with a friendly group atmosphere, making life on board both comfortable and sociable.
You’ll want to pack clothing suitable for warm tropical conditions, including light layers, swimwear, and waterproof or windproof outerwear for cooler or breezy days at sea. Non-marking deck shoes or trainers are essential for safety on board. Don’t forget sun protection such as a hat, sunglasses, and high SPF sunscreen.
Bringing a camera or smartphone is recommended to capture the stunning scenery and wildlife. If you have a drone, check with the crew beforehand, as usage depends on weather and local regulations. Personal toiletries and any medications you require should also be included.
The sailing trip involves some physical activity but is manageable for most people of average fitness. You’ll have opportunities to participate in sailing tasks such as helming and sail handling, shared among the group with support from the crew. These activities vary in intensity, allowing you to choose your level of involvement.
There is also plenty of downtime to relax, swim, snorkel, or explore islands during stops. If you have any mobility concerns or health issues, it’s best to discuss them with the organisers before booking so they can assist where possible.
The skipper monitors weather conditions closely and plans the route to prioritise safety and comfort. The Indian Ocean’s conditions can vary, with periods of calm and occasional rougher seas. Adjustments to the itinerary or route may be made to avoid adverse weather.
In case of bad weather preventing sailing on certain days, alternative activities or sheltered anchorages may be offered. Flexibility is important on ocean voyages, and guests are encouraged to embrace the changing conditions as part of the experience.
All meals and non-alcoholic drinks are provided on board throughout the trip. The menu includes nutritious, tasty options suitable for life at sea, often blending local flavours with familiar dishes. Guests can expect breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks prepared fresh onboard.
Yes, guests are encouraged to get involved in sailing activities as much as they wish. Whether it’s helming, trimming sails, navigation, or ropework, there are plenty of opportunities to learn and practice skills under expert guidance.
If you prefer a more relaxed experience, it’s perfectly acceptable to take a back seat and enjoy the voyage. The crew fosters a welcoming atmosphere where all levels of involvement are respected.
The yacht is fully equipped with safety gear including life jackets, emergency signalling devices, and communication equipment. The skipper holds commercial offshore qualifications and has extensive experience ensuring passenger safety.
A comprehensive safety briefing is given at the start of the trip covering life jacket use, emergency procedures, and basic safety practices. The small group size allows for personalised attention and close support from the crew at all times.
