A self-guided two-day mountain biking trip based in the Cairngorms National Park offers a relaxed way to explore the beautiful surroundings. Starting from Fraoch Lodge, this trip combines leisurely biking with scenic views and the chance to experience the area’s unique wildlife and history. With routes set in the heart of the Highlands, you’ll be guided by maps and route suggestions while enjoying the convenience of the Strathspey Steam Railway.
Day 1
Upon arrival in Scotland, you’ll be met at your arrival point, either Inverness Airport or Aviemore Station, and transferred to Fraoch Lodge for a welcoming tea and a crackling fire. After breakfast on Day 1, the journey begins with a short ride to the nearby station to board the Strathspey Steam Railway. The scenic train ride offers panoramic views of Strathspey and the Cairngorms before arriving at ‘Glenbogle Station,’ famously known from the BBC series Monarch of the Glen.
From here, you’ll cycle along quiet lanes, crossing the River Spey and following the River Nethy to Nethybridge for a break. The route continues through the RSPB National Nature Reserve of Abernethy before reaching Loch Garten, where you’ll enjoy a picnic lunch and views over the hills. You’ll visit the Osprey hide before returning to Fraoch Lodge for a relaxing “Cake O’clock” by the fire.
Day 2
After breakfast, you’ll head in the opposite direction along the Speyside Way towards a local gastro-pub for Sunday lunch. This scenic route takes you through birch woods and heather moorland with expansive views to the Cairngorms. After a delicious lunch, you’ll have free time to explore Aviemore, with options including swimming, a visit to the fish farm, or even a high ropes course.
If you prefer to relax, the Rothiemurchus Estate and Loch an Eilean offer a peaceful retreat. In the afternoon, you’ll board the final Steam Train back to Boat of Garten, where you can enjoy another round of Cake O’clock at Fraoch Lodge before departure.
