Passion for windsurfing meets practical teaching on this RYA Start Windsurfing Instructor course, designed for confident sailors ready to coach others. Over five full days, focus shifts from personal performance to delivering safe, engaging sessions for both adults and young people following the RYA Start Windsurfing and Youth Windsurfing schemes.
Early sessions concentrate on understanding how the RYA windsurfing schemes are structured and how sessions are planned from first contact through to confident progression. Time is spent breaking down techniques, learning how to demonstrate clearly, and adapting explanations for different learning styles. Simulator work plays a key role, helping refine delivery before heading onto the water.
As the week progresses, attention turns to group teaching and session management. Candidates practise running full sessions, including briefings, demonstrations, on-water coaching, and debriefs. Emphasis is placed on safety awareness, communication, and creating a positive environment that keeps learners engaged and progressing.
Towards the end of the course, candidates are moderated by an independent trainer. Assessment focuses on preparation, delivery, and overall management rather than just windsurfing ability, ensuring instructors are ready to teach confidently and responsibly.
Training takes place in Poole Harbour, a well-suited area for windsurfing instruction thanks to its sheltered waters and reliable conditions. The environment supports both simulator work ashore and practical coaching afloat.
Nearby facilities allow for clear briefings, equipment preparation, and reflective debriefs throughout the week.
Candidates must be aged 16 or over and sail to an intermediate non-planing standard. Confidence with beach starts and non-planing gybes is required before attending.
RYA Powerboat Level 2, a valid First Aid certificate, and RYA Safe and Fun Safeguarding must be completed prior to the course. This course does not include any prerequisite training.
The course is delivered by experienced trainers who understand how to develop confident instructors, not just capable windsurfers. Coaching focuses on clarity, safety, and creating enjoyable sessions for learners of all ages.
Small group sizes allow plenty of hands-on teaching practice and individual feedback. Supportive delivery helps candidates grow into the instructor role with confidence and consistency.

After successful completion, you'll be qualified to teach the RYA Start Windsurfing course and the RYA Youth Windsurfing Scheme at windsurfing schools worldwide. It opens opportunities for teaching both recreational and more structured youth training programs.
If you do not pass the final moderation, you can discuss your areas for improvement with the moderator and potentially retake the assessment or specific parts of the course, depending on the areas you need to strengthen.
