Our RYA Powerboat Level 2 course is perfect for those looking to become competent powerboat drivers. It provides the essential skills and knowledge needed for safe and effective boat handling, forming the basis for the International Certificate of Competence. Whether you’re new to powerboating or looking to formalise your skills, this two-day course covers close-quarters handling, man overboard recovery, driving at planing speed, and collision regulations.
Over two days, you’ll spend approximately 80% of the course on the water and 20% in the classroom. You'll learn key skills such as launching and recovering the boat, handling it at low speeds in close quarters, and securing to a buoy or anchoring. Practical exercises include man overboard recovery and an introduction to driving at planing speed. You’ll also cover essential seamanship and collision regulations to ensure safe boating practices. Upon completion, you'll be a self-sufficient powerboater, aware of both your own limitations and those of your boat.
The course takes place on the River Trent between Hazleford Lock and Newark Nether Lock, a calm and controlled environment ideal for learning and practising boat handling.
As an RYA-recognised training centre, we offer high-quality instruction in small groups to ensure personalised attention. Our experienced instructors are dedicated to helping you become a confident and competent powerboater. We also offer the flexibility to train on your own boat at a location of your choice (pricing varies). Our training area on the River Trent provides the ideal setting for both beginners and those looking to refine their skills.
Note: This course requires a minimum number of participants to run. If the numbers are not met, we will either reschedule or offer a refund. We can also transfer your booking to a later date if it’s more convenient for you.

Approximately 80% of the course takes place on the water, giving you plenty of hands-on experience. The remaining 20% is classroom-based, covering theory, seamanship, and safety regulations.
