Moving beyond beginner instruction, this RYA Intermediate Windsurfing Instructor course is aimed at instructors ready to coach sailors at a more technical level. Over four focused days, attention shifts to dynamic techniques, higher wind sailing, and supporting students as they move into harness use, foot straps, and planing skills.
Early stages of the course focus on understanding how the RYA Intermediate Windsurfing Scheme is structured and how it differs from beginner-level teaching. Time is spent looking at progression, common challenges, and how to break down more complex techniques into clear, achievable steps. Emphasis is placed on adapting delivery to wind strength, water state, and group confidence.
On the water, candidates practise coaching sailors into harness use, foot straps, and controlled planing. Demonstrations, observation, and feedback form a large part of each session, helping instructors refine how they explain and support more demanding skills. Safety awareness remains central, particularly when managing groups in higher winds.
Assessment runs throughout the course, focusing on coaching ability rather than personal performance alone. Candidates are expected to show confident session management, clear communication, and the ability to support progression while keeping sessions enjoyable and controlled.
Training takes place in Poole Harbour, an excellent venue for intermediate windsurf instruction. Sheltered areas allow controlled coaching, while open sections of the harbour provide space to work on planing and higher-speed techniques when conditions allow.
Shore facilities support briefings, rigging discussions, and reflective debriefs, helping candidates link coaching decisions back to conditions and student needs.
Candidates must be aged 16 or over and already hold the RYA Start Windsurfing Instructor qualification, with evidence of at least 50 logged instructing hours at an RYA training centre. A strong background in personal sailing is required, including either intermediate planing or advanced personal sailing certification with relevant clinics completed.
RYA Powerboat Level 2, a valid First Aid certificate, RYA Safe and Fun Safeguarding, and current RYA membership must all be in place before attending. This course does not include any prerequisite training.
Delivery is led by trainers with extensive experience coaching windsurf instructors through advanced pathways. Sessions focus on real coaching scenarios rather than theory-heavy delivery, helping skills transfer directly into centre-based work.
Small group sizes allow detailed feedback and plenty of time on the water. The supportive atmosphere encourages confidence, progression, and honest discussion around coaching challenges at higher levels.
