The RYA Day Skipper Shore-Based course provides a comprehensive foundation in seamanship, navigation, and meteorology, equipping sailors and motor boaters with the skills needed to navigate safely. This five-day theory course is perfect for anyone looking to build confidence in inshore and coastal navigation. By the end of the course, you should be able to plan and execute passages in familiar waters during daylight hours. No previous experience is required, although any practical boating knowledge will be beneficial.

The course is held at our training centre in Newark, Nottinghamshire, in a comfortable classroom setting fully equipped with all necessary materials and tools. We can also arrange group courses at alternative locations for businesses or organisations.
No prior navigation experience is required. This course is suitable for complete beginners, although any previous practical boating experience will be helpful.

The course runs for five days and covers approximately 40 hours of instruction. Classes typically run from 09:00 to 17:00 each day, with breaks for tea, coffee, and lunch.
Yes, upon successfully completing the course and passing the two exam papers, you will receive the RYA Day Skipper Theory certificate. This certification is widely recognised and a useful stepping stone towards further qualifications.

No pre-course study is required. However, during the course, you may be assigned homework or revision tasks to help prepare for the exams. It’s recommended that you review course materials in your own time to reinforce your learning.
There are two exam papers, which will be taken at the end of the course. The exams cover the topics taught over the five days, such as navigation, chart work, collision regulations, and meteorology. These exams will assess your ability to navigate and plan passages safely.
