Paddle along the beautiful River Tweed from Glenkinnon to Abbotsford House on this sociable and scenic canoe session. Whether you’re looking to try canoeing for the first time or seeking a fun group activity, this trip offers the perfect mix of adventure and relaxation. With two-person canoes, it’s an excellent way to connect with friends, family, or colleagues while enjoying the surroundings of the Scottish Borders.
The session begins with an introduction to your canoe and paddling techniques. You’ll be guided through the basics, ensuring everyone feels comfortable before setting off. The two-person canoes are stable and spacious, making them perfect for both beginners and those with some paddling experience.
From Glenkinnon, you’ll paddle downstream, taking in the beautiful river views and surrounding countryside from a unique perspective. The route to Abbotsford takes approximately three hours, with a planned stop halfway down the river. This stop is the ideal opportunity to rest, eat, and enjoy the calmness of the area. Feel free to bring your own food and drinks for the break.
The trip finishes near Abbotsford House, under the Gala footbridge. If you have your own transport arranged, you can easily get back to the starting point. If not, don’t worry – just let us know, and we’ll assist with transport options.
This canoe session takes place along the River Tweed, with the journey beginning at Glenkinnon and ending under the Gala footbridge near Abbotsford House. The river winds through some of the most scenic landscapes in the Scottish Borders, with lush green countryside, woodland, and historic landmarks. Abbotsford House, once the home of Sir Walter Scott, adds a touch of history to the picturesque setting, making it a memorable location to end your paddle.
The Tweed Valley is renowned for its beauty, and the river itself provides a peaceful and enjoyable route for paddling. The area is easily accessible, and while it offers a peaceful environment, it’s also close to various amenities, making it an ideal location for both relaxation and adventure.
Please note: The guide can transport up to five people back to the meeting point at the end of the trip to collect their car if needed.
No prior canoeing experience is necessary for this activity, so it’s suitable for beginners and those looking to enjoy a leisurely paddle. Participants should feel comfortable around water and be prepared for light physical activity.
As the session lasts for approximately three hours, a moderate level of fitness is recommended. All safety equipment, including life jackets and paddles, is provided, and our experienced instructors will be on hand throughout to ensure everyone is safe and comfortable.

We provide 30 litre barrels between 2, for people to keep items dry.
Generally two people would normally share a boat, but some have 3 seats so can add a third person if needed.
We always aim to provide as much notice as possible if an activity cannot go ahead. This might occur due to factors such as high river levels for canoeing or severe weather warnings for wind.
Occasionally, unforeseen circumstances may require us to cancel at short notice. In such cases, we will do our best to offer an alternative activity or location.
If we have to cancel an activity, any money paid will be fully refunded.
The session lasts approximately 3 hours, starting at 11am and finishing near Abbotsford House under the Gala footbridge.
Participants must be at least 10 years old to take part in the activity.
Please note that children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
Each session accommodates up to 8 participants.
