Build, paddle, and compete as you put your teamwork to the test on the waters of Ripley Castle’s private lake. Using barrels, logs, and ropes, your group will create a raft that must not only float but also race across the water. It’s all about communication, problem-solving, and plenty of laughter along the way.
The activity begins lakeside with a briefing from your instructors, who will explain the rules and introduce you to the materials. Then it’s over to your team to design and build a raft sturdy enough to carry you across the castle’s historic waters. This part of the challenge is full of creativity, teamwork, and the occasional debate over which design will float best.
Once construction is complete, it’s time to put your handiwork to the test. Working together with paddles, you’ll race your raft across the lake, steering around buoys or simply trying to stay afloat. Expect lots of cheering, splashing, and a good chance of someone ending up in the water. The real reward is seeing your group work as one and celebrating the success—whether that’s gliding smoothly or wobbling with style.
Ripley Castle in Harrogate provides a beautiful backdrop for raft building. The castle’s private lake offers calm, safe waters with views of historic architecture, landscaped gardens, and wooded parkland. It’s a unique setting that combines heritage and adventure in one place.
The venue is just a short drive from Harrogate town centre and easily reached from Leeds, York, and the wider Yorkshire area. With free parking onsite and plenty of space to relax before and after your activity, Ripley Castle is the perfect base for a memorable outdoor experience.
No experience is required, as this activity is suitable for beginners and seasoned adventurers alike. Instructors will support your team throughout, offering guidance when needed but giving you the freedom to build, test, and laugh your way through the challenge.
All participants should be comfortable around water and bring a change of clothes. Raft building is known for its splashes and unexpected dips, so coming prepared makes the experience even more enjoyable.
Founded in 2012 by two outdoor enthusiasts who met while climbing, the centre was created to bring people together through adventure. Over the years, it has grown into a trusted provider of outdoor activities while keeping a welcoming, personal approach at its core.
With a strong focus on teamwork and group experiences, the instructors know how to get the best out of every team. Whether it’s a corporate event, a family day out, or a celebration with friends, your raft building session is designed to be safe, memorable, and great fun for all involved.
Yes, free parking is available at Ripley Castle for all visitors. When you arrive, it’s important to register your vehicle to ensure that parking is properly recorded. This can easily be done on the iPad located at reception, which helps the centre manage spaces efficiently and keeps everything organised for your visit.
The parking area is conveniently located close to the main facilities, making it straightforward to access your activity without a long walk. Even during busier periods, there is usually sufficient space for cars, so you shouldn’t need to worry about finding a spot. It is recommended to allow a few extra minutes when arriving to register your vehicle and make your way to the activity area.
Spectators are welcome at Ripley Castle and can enjoy watching the activities while relaxing with a coffee or finding a comfortable spot nearby. This makes it easy for friends and family to be part of the experience without needing to participate directly. It’s a great way to keep everyone included, whether you are taking on a challenging adventure or a more leisurely activity.
However, please note that some areas, such as the lake, are a considerable distance from Basecamp and are not accessible for wheelchairs or pushchairs. It’s important for spectators to plan accordingly if they wish to follow along closely. While everyone is welcome, the terrain and activity locations may limit how much of the action can be observed from certain spots.
Basic changing facilities are provided for visitors who need privacy before or after their activity. These spaces are simple but functional, allowing you to change comfortably without disturbing other guests. They are designed to meet essential needs rather than offer extensive amenities.
For convenience, it is generally recommended to arrive dressed and ready for your activity. This reduces the need to rely on the changing areas and allows you to start your adventure promptly. Preparing in advance also helps minimise delays and ensures you can make the most of your time at the centre.
Dogs are welcome at Ripley Castle, as we encourage adventurers to share their experiences with their furry friends. Having your dog along can make your outdoor visit more enjoyable and adds an extra layer of companionship to your day. For safety and comfort, dogs must be kept on a lead at all times, and owners should ensure their pets are well-behaved and friendly towards other visitors and animals.
Please be aware that some areas, including the lake, Disc Golf, Cryptic Chase, and Archery, do not allow dogs. These restrictions are in place to maintain safety for both your pet and other participants. Planning ahead will help you make the most of your visit while ensuring your dog remains safe, happy, and part of the experience wherever permitted.
Raft building is very hands-on and involves testing a raft on the open water, so there’s a strong chance of splashes or even an accidental dip. Even if your raft is solid, the paddling challenges and laughter-filled races often leave participants damp by the end. It’s part of what makes the activity so much fun.
It’s always best to arrive prepared with a full change of clothes, spare shoes, and a towel. That way, you can enjoy the activity without worrying about staying dry and leave the castle grounds feeling warm and comfortable.
A small selection of wetsuits and waterproof cags are available if you’d like them, but these are limited in number. They can be particularly useful in colder weather or if you expect your raft to be less than watertight. All participants will be provided with buoyancy aids as standard.
If you already own a wetsuit and prefer to use your own, you’re welcome to bring it along. Many groups choose to wear lightweight outdoor clothing that dries quickly, especially during summer months, when wetsuits aren’t usually necessary.
Yes, every participant will be fitted with a buoyancy aid and helmet before going near the water. The instructors also deliver a safety briefing and will be present throughout the session to supervise and support your group.
The barrels, logs, and ropes provided are all checked for safety and suitability. Combined with expert guidance, you can take on the challenge with confidence while still having plenty of fun.
Raft building is an outdoor activity that relies on safe conditions. If strong winds, heavy rain, or storms are forecast, the session will be rescheduled. Your group will always be updated in advance so plans can be rearranged easily.
Light rain won’t usually stop the activity and can even add an extra element of fun. With the right clothing, paddling in a drizzle often makes for a more memorable session.
Yes, it’s designed to be inclusive and doesn’t require prior experience in paddling or construction. The aim is to work as a team, get creative, and see how well your raft performs. Everyone can contribute, whether through building, tying ropes, or paddling.
The instructors are there to guide and encourage but will leave the majority of the challenge in your team’s hands. This makes it a perfect choice for groups with mixed abilities.
