This activity is your own private day in the highlands, with pickup in Reykjavik, a capable 4x4 drive into Landmannalaugar and a guided hike through some of Iceland's most colourful volcanic scenery. You will finish with time in a natural hot spring before the return journey home.
You will be collected from your accommodation and travel in a comfortable 4x4 through scenery that shifts from green coastal valleys to stark highland desert, with your guide sharing stories and stopping for photographs when the light and the road allow. By the time you reach Landmannalaugar base camp, you will already feel far from the city.
On the trail you will walk for several hours through multicoloured rhyolite hills, lava fields and steaming ground at a pace tailored to your group. After the hike you will soak in the outdoor geothermal pool, then settle in for the scenic return drive to Reykjavik with flexibility built in for one more viewpoint if you still have energy.
Landmannalaugar sits in the Icelandic Interior Highlands, a volcanic wilderness reached by seasonal mountain tracks that ordinary cars cannot use. Rivers, ash plains and painted ridges surround the base camp, and the sense of space out here is unlike anything along the main road.
Your journey crosses that raw interior in a single day, which is why the 4x4 drive is part of the adventure rather than just transport. You will see how quickly Iceland changes once you leave the coast, and you will understand why walkers from around the world make the pilgrimage to these coloured mountains.
You should be comfortable with a full day of travel and several hours on foot with a daypack. The hiking is easy to moderate on well used highland paths, and your guide adjusts the route to match your group's fitness and interests.
Come dressed for changeable weather with lunch, snacks and swimwear packed from the morning. Sturdy boots and warm layers make the long day far more enjoyable when the wind picks up on the open ground.
A private vehicle and dedicated guide mean the day unfolds at your pace, not a fixed coach timetable. You can linger at a viewpoint, ask questions about the geology, or take a shorter loop if the weather turns without negotiating with strangers in a large group.
We combine the highland drive, the hike and the hot spring into one seamless day from your Reykjavik door. You get the full Landmannalaugar experience with personal attention from start to finish.
Your driver guide collects you from your Reykjavik hotel or another agreed accommodation address in the city.
Return drop-off in Reykjavik is included at the end of the day, typically around 8:00 pm depending on road conditions and time at the hot spring.
