See the breadth of Icelandic nature in a single four-hour helicopter expedition from Reykjavik. This extended aerial journey crosses Thingvellir, Geysir, Gullfoss, the rhyolite mountains of Landmannalaugar, Thorsmork valley and Eyjafjallajokull volcano, connecting the Golden Circle with the remote highland interior.
After check-in at the hangar, this four-hour expedition lifts off for an uninterrupted aerial circuit across south and highland Iceland. Golden Circle landmarks unfold first before the route pushes into terrain that would take days to reach by road, including Landmannalaugar's colourful rhyolite ridges and the glacier-capped south coast.
Your pilot narrates the geological and cultural significance of each major landmark throughout the journey, adapting the exact flight path to weather and visibility on the day. The minimum group of four passengers allows use of aircraft suited to longer cross-country routes with extended fuel range.
South Iceland spans from the tectonic rift at Thingvellir through the Golden Circle geothermal zone to the highland interior at Landmannalaugar and the glacier-dominated south coast around Eyjafjallajokull and Thorsmork. Each zone represents a different chapter in Iceland's geological story, from continental drift to rhyolite eruptions and glacial flooding.
From the helicopter these landscapes connect in a single continuous panorama, with Háifoss waterfall, volcanic sand beaches and Myrdalsjokull glacier tongues visible along the route. The highland sections in particular reveal terrain that most visitors never see, even on extended road trips.
No flying experience is required. Passengers should be able to board the aircraft with minimal assistance and follow the pilot safety briefing before this longer flight.
Extended highland routes depend on weather and aviation conditions. The itinerary may be adjusted if conditions require it on the day, and this tour requires a minimum of four passengers to operate.
Essential Iceland lives up to its name by connecting the country's headline sights with remote highland terrain in one continuous flight, offering perspectives impossible to achieve by any other means of transport in a single morning or afternoon.
Experienced pilots with extensive cross-country flying experience narrate the geological and cultural significance of each landmark, turning four hours in the air into a comprehensive introduction to the forces that shaped the island.
The full experience lasts approximately four hours including check in, extensive aerial sightseeing and return to the airport base.
Allow at least 15 minutes before your scheduled departure for briefing and boarding. This is one of the most comprehensive helicopter tours available from Reykjavik.
Flights depart from Reykjavik Domestic Airport at Nauthólsvegur 58d, building 313, hangar 1, on the east side of the airport behind the Icelandair Reykjavik Natura hotel.
The base is not at the commercial airline terminal. Taxis from central Reykjavik typically take around five minutes.
The route covers Thingvellir National Park, Geysir geothermal area, Gullfoss waterfall, Landmannalaugar rhyolite mountains, Hrafntinnusker, volcanic sand beaches, Myrdalsjokull glacier, Thorsmork valley and Eyjafjallajokull volcano.
Háifoss waterfall and geothermal power plants also feature along this extensive cross-country aerial journey.
Helicopter flights depend on weather and aviation conditions. If conditions are unsafe, the pilot may adjust the route, omit landings or postpone the flight.
Wind, low cloud and visibility across highland sections may require route adjustments. The pilot makes the final call on the day.
Wear sturdy shoes, a warm jacket, hat and gloves as recommended for highland helicopter flights. The cabin stays comfortable during flight, similar to a car interior.
Dress in layers and bring a camera with a secure strap. Any ground stops at highland locations can be cold and windy even in summer.
Children are welcome subject to aircraft capacity. Infants may need to sit on a parent lap depending on the aircraft configuration and local aviation rules.
Contact us before booking if travelling with very young children to confirm seating arrangements for this longer flight.
Transport to Reykjavik Domestic Airport is not included. Taxis and private transfers can reach the hangar in a few minutes from central Reykjavik hotels.
Free parking is available near the meeting point. Plan to arrive early as late arrivals may miss strict aviation slot times.
This tour requires a minimum of four passengers to operate. If the minimum is not reached, you may be offered an alternative date or join another scheduled departure.
Maximum capacity is ten passengers per departure. Contact the team if you are a smaller group to discuss scheduling options.
This tour overflies both the famous Golden Circle landmarks and the remote highland interior including Landmannalaugar, terrain that would take many hours to reach by road.
The helicopter route connects south coast glaciers, highland valleys and classic Golden Circle sights in a single continuous aerial journey.
This is primarily an aerial expedition with extensive sightseeing from the helicopter throughout the four-hour route.
Any brief stops depend on conditions on the day, but the focus is on overflying Iceland's headline landscapes rather than extended ground exploration.
