Each person paddles their own packraft for eleven kilometres of the Zrmanja, starting at Kaštel Žegarski, with a guide watching the group rather than steering a shared raft. The first stretch is used to practise turning and stopping, then you run rapids, swim under a waterfall and stop for a picnic you have brought yourself. The trip is built for up to ten people, the minimum age is twelve, and morning or afternoon starts are offered.
We'll see you at Kaštel Žegarski, morning or afternoon, and put you in your own packraft for eleven kilometres of the Zrmanja. The first stretch is easy water so you can turn and stop before the rapids start asking more of you. After that you're on your own line through the limestone canyon, with us watching a group of no more than ten.
Midway we pull in at the big waterfall to swim and eat the snack you brought; that's the long break of the day, so take it. The remaining kilometres mix moving water and quieter pools, and we van you back to the same village to change. From there it's the same road out towards Zadar.
Kaštel Žegarski sits on the Zrmanja in the hinterland of North Dalmatia, about an hour from Zadar, postcode 23450. The meeting point is the river base in the village, and the canyon opens quickly once you leave the put-in. Ličko-senjska is the closest listed district in the catalogue, with Obrovac as the nearest larger settlement on the road in.
The eleven-kilometre stretch is a mix of practice water, rapids and a waterfall stop, then a van ride back to the base. You will need your own transport to the village unless a transfer is on your booking. From Zadar the usual drive is via Smilčić and Obrovac, staying on the main road rather than dropping into Obrovac town.
You must be at least twelve and able to paddle your own packraft after the practice stretch. A reasonable level of everyday fitness is asked for because eleven kilometres is a full morning or afternoon on the water. No prior kayak or raft experience is required.
Bring a snack if you want to eat at the waterfall stop, because lunch is not supplied. Skip the trip if you are pregnant or carrying an injury that would make a swim or a rapid a problem. The guide's decision on the day stands if the water is too high or the group is not ready.
This departure is kept to a smaller group than the sit-on-top canyon days, with a design limit of ten, so the guide can actually watch each packraft. The first part of the river is used as a classroom, which matters when everyone is in their own boat rather than a shared raft.
Two starts a day, morning and afternoon, make it easier to fit around a stay in Zadar or on the coast. You finish back at the same base in Kaštel Žegarski, so the drive out is the same road you came in on.
You paddle a small one-person inflatable on the Zrmanja instead of sharing a raft or a double kayak. A guide stays with the group and you handle your own boat after a practice stretch at the start.
The route is eleven kilometres from Kaštel Žegarski, with rapids, a swim stop and a picnic break you supply yourself. It is aimed at smaller groups, up to ten people.
No. The first part of the river is used to practise paddling and steering before the busier water. Everyday fitness is enough if you are happy to be on the move for about four hours.
You must be twelve or older because each guest has their own boat. Families with younger children should look at the sit-on-top canyon trip instead.
There are two departures: morning around 09:00 and afternoon around 14:00. Check-in is a little before those times so the briefing can start on schedule.
The van back to the village is after the take-out, so the whole outing is about four hours.
The meeting point is the river base in Kaštel Žegarski, postcode 23450. You kit up there and return there at the end of the paddle.
From Zadar allow about an hour via Smilčić and Obrovac, staying on the main road rather than turning down into Obrovac town. Bring your own car unless a transfer is on your rate.
No. The waterfall stop is a picnic you bring yourself, so pack a snack and water if you want to eat on the bank. Nothing is cooked or served on the river.
There is time to swim at that stop as well. Keep food in a dry bag if you have one, or ask the guide where personal items can ride.
The minimum is four and the trip is designed for up to ten. That is smaller than the sit-on-top canyon departures so the guide can watch each packraft.
If your group is under four you may still go if other bookings fill the gap. If the minimum is not reached you will be offered another time or a refund.
Wear shorts or a swimsuit, a T-shirt and a hat, and bring shoes that can get wet, a towel and a dry change. Sun cream, water and a snack for the picnic stop are worth packing.
Leave phones at the base unless you have a proper dry case. The boat, paddle, buoyancy aid and helmet are supplied.
Only from twelve upwards, because everyone paddles their own packraft. Under-eighteens should come with a responsible adult.
For younger children the Zrmanja sit-on-top and raft day, minimum age six, is the product that fits. Do not book this one hoping a younger child can share your boat.
A normal shower rarely stops the paddle. You were going to get wet on the rapids and at the waterfall anyway.
The trip is only moved when the river or weather is outside what is safe. If that happens you get another date or a refund under the one-day terms.
Eight or more days before, no charge. Two to seven days before, half the booking is charged. One day before or a no-show is charged in full.
If we stop the trip for safety, you are offered another date or a refund under the same one-day terms.
