Four hours on the Mrežnica takes you through a limestone canyon with six travertine falls, clear water you can swim in, and an optional jump from a high rock if you want it. Guides brief the group in Primišlje, then you paddle sit-on-top kayaks that suit first-timers as well as people who already know a boat. Children from six can join, which is why families staying near Plitvice often use this as their river day.
We'll meet you in Primišlje and get you onto sit-on-tops for a limestone gorge with six travertine falls. The water is clear enough to swim in, and the pace is set so you can look at the drops rather than race them. First-timers and families share boats when that makes sense, and we keep the group together through the short falls and the pools in between.
Halfway down we pull in at the big waterfall for a swim. There's a jump from a high rock, around nine metres, if you fancy it, and plenty of people just float and look at the falls. Then we paddle the rest of the canyon and a van brings you back to the same village. Change there before you drive on.
Primišlje sits on the Mrežnica in inland Croatia, a short drive from the Plitvice Lakes area, and the meeting point is in the village itself. The canyon is close enough to the national park that many people stay nearby, yet the river is open for swimming in a way the park lakes are not. Karlovačka county is the wider district, with Duga Resa and Karlovac as the practical towns for fuel and a bed.
The stretch you paddle is a mix of short drops over travertine and calmer pools between the falls. You put in and finish so that a van can run the group back to Primišlje, and you will need your own transport to the village unless a transfer is on your booking. Parking is at the base, not on the riverbank mid-canyon.
No kayaking experience is required. Children from six are welcome when a parent or responsible adult is on the trip, and the sit-on-top boats are stable enough for a first day on moving water. You should be happy to get wet and to follow simple paddle instructions after the briefing.
The optional cliff jump is around nine metres and is never required. Skip it if you are unsure, pregnant, or carrying an injury. Everyday fitness is enough for the paddle, and the guide decides on the day whether the water suits the group that has turned up.
Resident guides work this canyon through the season, so they already know which falls are good for a swim and which lines are sensible for a mixed group. Kit is fitted in the village before you leave, including a buoyancy aid, helmet and paddle, and the briefing is aimed at people who have never kayaked as well as those who have.
Departures sit at 10:00 or 11:30 so you can plan around a stay near Plitvice without an extra night. The van brings you back to the same meeting point, which keeps the day simple if you have driven in from the park.
No. The briefing in the village covers how to sit, how to paddle and how to stay with the group, and the sit-on-top boats are chosen because they are stable for first-timers.
If you have paddled before you will still go through the same talk, because the canyon has its own lines and the guide wants everyone using the same commands.
Yes. The minimum age is six, and a child on this trip should be with a parent or responsible adult. Double kayaks are the usual setup so a younger paddler can share a boat.
Tell us ages when you book so the guide can plan the group. The optional high jump is not for young children and nobody is made to try it.
No. The jump from the high rock, around nine metres, is only if you want it. Plenty of people swim at the waterfall and get back in the kayak without jumping.
The guide will say on the day whether the landing is clear. If you would rather stay in the boat, that is a normal choice on this trip.
The meeting point is in Primišlje village, postcode 47240, on the Mrežnica. You kit up there and return there at the end of the paddle.
You need your own transport to the village unless a transfer is part of your rate. There is space at the base to leave a car while you are on the river.
Plan on about four hours from check-in to the van back to Primišlje. That includes the briefing, time on the water, the swim stop and the ride from the take-out.
Start times are usually 10:00 or 11:30, which gives you a morning or a slightly later run if you are coming from a stay near Plitvice.
Wear shorts or a swimsuit with a T-shirt, and bring shoes that can get wet, a towel and a dry change. Sun cream, water and a snack are useful because you are outside for several hours.
Leave phones somewhere dry at the base. A buoyancy aid, helmet and paddle are supplied, so you do not need your own river kit.
Yes. Unlike the lakes in Plitvice National Park, you can swim in the Mrežnica on this trip, and the itinerary includes a stop at the big waterfall for that.
You still wear a buoyancy aid when the guide asks you to, including in moving water. The swim is a planned break, not a free-for-all down the whole canyon.
Every trip needs at least four guests. If your own party is smaller, you may still go if other bookings that day bring the total up.
If the minimum is not reached you will be offered another time or a refund. Say how many of you are coming when you book.
Light rain rarely stops a river day, and you were going to get wet anyway. The briefing and the paddle still go ahead in a normal shower.
The trip is only moved or cancelled when the water or weather is outside what is safe. If that happens you get another date or a refund in line with the one-day cancellation terms.
Cancel eight or more days before and there is no charge. Between two and seven days before, half the booking is charged, and one day before or a no-show is charged in full.
If we have to stop the trip for safety, you are offered another date or a refund.
