The Nitrox Plus Diver course builds upon enriched air diving knowledge and introduces divers to using twin cylinders for greater gas supply and safety. Aimed at recreational divers ready to progress towards technical diving, it focuses on managing two-cylinder setups, extended dive planning, and deeper dives up to 40 metres.
Training starts at the Gosforth dive centre, where instructors introduce advanced Nitrox theory and dual-cylinder handling. You’ll review gas physiology, dive limits, and planning procedures for deeper dives, gaining an understanding of how to balance oxygen exposure with gas reserves. The classroom element also covers equipment configuration, including regulator setup and safety checks for using two cylinders.
Confined water sessions allow you to become familiar with the twin-cylinder system and buoyancy control before heading to open water. During the open water dives, you’ll practise switching gases, monitoring exposure, and maintaining buoyancy at depth. The course focuses on control, precision, and awareness, helping divers gain the confidence to handle extended dive times and deeper environments safely.
Classroom training takes place at the Gosforth dive centre (NE3 2HY). Confined water sessions are held at Elsdon Avenue Pool in Seaton Delaval, Whitley Bay (NE25 0BP), providing a calm environment for equipment setup and control practice. Open water dives are completed at suitable UK dive sites such as Capernwray Quarry, Ellerton Lake, or Beadnell Bay, chosen for their safe access and visibility.
Each site provides the right conditions for real-world practice, ensuring you can apply your new skills effectively. The combination of theory, confined, and open water elements delivers a well-rounded and practical learning experience.
Divers must hold an Open Water Diver and standard Nitrox certification or equivalent. You should have a solid understanding of buoyancy and underwater control, with prior experience in standard single-cylinder diving.
This course bridges recreational and technical diving, providing a smooth transition to more advanced levels. Instructors guide each participant carefully to ensure comfort and competence before moving on to deeper dives and dual-cylinder setups.
Instruction is led by experienced divers who focus on practical skills, safety, and confidence-building. Each session is designed to be clear and supportive, helping divers make the transition towards more complex gas management systems.
Small group sizes ensure personalised supervision during both theory and in-water training. The combination of professional teaching, flexible scheduling, and diverse dive locations creates an ideal environment for advanced learning.
The Nitrox Plus course expands on basic Nitrox theory by introducing twin-cylinder systems and dives up to 40 metres. This allows divers to plan for longer bottom times and better gas redundancy, improving safety and flexibility underwater.
Instructors teach how to manage multiple cylinders, perform safety checks, and plan for contingencies at greater depths. The course bridges recreational and entry-level technical diving, offering valuable skills for those planning more advanced training.
No prior experience with twin sets is required. The course begins with detailed equipment setup demonstrations and confined water practice, allowing you to familiarise yourself with the configuration before open water dives.
By the time you reach open water, you’ll be confident managing valves, buoyancy, and gas switches safely. This gradual approach ensures divers progress comfortably and securely at their own pace.
The course allows for dives up to a maximum depth of 40 metres, depending on conditions and diver readiness. These dives are conducted progressively, with instructors closely supervising each stage of descent and ascent.
The depth exposure provides valuable experience in managing buoyancy, monitoring gas use, and applying Nitrox principles at greater pressures, preparing divers for future advanced or technical training.
You’ll need standard scuba equipment plus a twin-cylinder setup, which can be hired if required. Instructors will help configure and check your setup to ensure safe and efficient use during the course.
Gas analysis tools and labels are provided, and you’ll learn how to prepare your cylinders correctly for enriched air diving. This knowledge is essential for all future multi-cylinder diving.
Yes. Nitrox Plus serves as a stepping stone to technical qualifications such as Decompression Diver or Trimix Diver. It builds strong foundations in gas handling, planning, and buoyancy that are essential for advanced diving.
The course also provides practical insight into what to expect in technical diving environments, helping divers decide how they want to progress safely and confidently.
