Spanning three summer days, this hut trek links the Fimmvörðuháls pass with the birch valleys of Þórsmörk with a certified leader past fresh lava, glacier viewpoints and long waterfall sections. Evening hut meals and shared dorm nights give a classic Icelandic trekking feel without camping gear, while your guide handles river levels, pass timing and daily pacing on exposed ground.
Day one climbs through mossy gorges toward a high hut with glacier views when cloud lifts. Snow patches and wind can appear even in summer, so steady pacing and full waterproofs matter from the first hour.
Day two crosses a pass that often holds snow before a river ford and descent into green Þórsmörk. Day three explores the valley floor, then you ride the scheduled bus back to Reykjavík with tired legs and ridge line photos on your memory card.
The route sits between Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull before dropping into sheltered birch woods. Steam vents, recent lava and long views toward the south coast appear whenever visibility opens.
Huts are spaced for classic trekking stages, so you taste both exposed mountain passes and softer valley walking before the return coach to the capital.
You should be comfortable hiking uphill for several hours with a multi day pack and coping with cold rain or wind on exposed ridges. Previous summer hillwalking is ideal preparation.
Waterproof boots with ankle support are essential, along with full waterproofs and warm layers. Pack a sleeping bag or liner as advised in your joining note from the team.
Certified mountain guides know hut routines, river fords and pass timings on this classic link, drawing on years of summer seasons guiding between Reykjavík and the highlands.
Small groups allow coaching on footwork across lava, snow and loose descents while still leaving time for photography and local stories about eruptions and folklore on the pass.
Meet at the BSÍ bus terminal on Vatnsmýrarvegur 10 in central Reykjavík. Public buses and taxis reach the terminal from most city hotels.
Arrive with hiking boots on and your main pack ready. The guide confirms any last-minute kit checks before the group departs toward the trailhead.
The trek begins at the BSÍ bus terminal in Reykjavík at Vatnsmýrarvegur 10. Arrive with hiking boots on and your main pack ready so the guide can run a kit check before the group heads toward the trailhead.
Public buses and taxis reach the terminal from most city hotels. Your joining note confirms exact meeting time and what to carry on the first walking day.
Day one includes roughly 1,000 metres of ascent on mountain paths. Plan for six to eight hours of walking with a pack on uneven ground, including short steep sections and possible snow.
Prior multi day hiking helps, but steady pacing and hut stops make the route achievable for active hikers who train before travel. Tell the guide about injuries at the first briefing.
You sleep in mountain huts on the route with shared facilities. Bedding arrangements are explained in your joining note so you know whether to bring a bag or liner.
Sauna access may be available at a hut when conditions allow. Keep earplugs and a headtorch handy for shared dormitory nights.
Hut dinners and breakfasts on the trail are included. You carry lunches, snacks and drinks for walking days because shops are scarce on the route.
Mention dietary needs at the first briefing so hut kitchens can plan where possible. Trail food should survive rain and long hours in your pack.
Bring a 40 litre or larger pack, waterproof hiking boots, warm layers, rain shell, hat, gloves, water and trail snacks. River crossing sandals help on day two.
Hiking poles are recommended. A swimsuit is useful if a hut sauna is open. Pack everything in dry bags inside your main pack.
Guests must be at least 12 years old. The route includes long days, river crossings and exposed mountain passes that demand maturity and stamina.
Teenagers should be used to full days on foot. Guardians remain responsible for younger group members throughout the hike.
Shallow river fords appear on the approach to Þórsmörk. Your guide chooses the line and may ask you to change footwear for the crossing.
Pack sandals or spare shoes in your day pack and keep electronics in dry bags. Trekking poles add balance when water is cold or pushy.
On day three you explore the valley before an afternoon bus from Þórsmörk back to Reykjavík, typically arriving mid evening. Keep evening plans flexible until the final day briefing confirms timing.
The guide explains where to stow luggage and how long the coach ride takes. Have snacks and water for the return journey.
Forecasts can force route changes or a delayed start. Guides prioritise shelter, visibility and river safety over sticking to a fixed timetable.
If conditions are unsafe on a section, the team may shorten the day or choose an alternative valley route while keeping the hut plan intact where possible.
Small groups allow the guide to coach footwork on snow patches, lava fields and steep descents while keeping everyone within sight.
You hear local stories about eruptions and folklore during breaks without rushing the physical pace needed for hut arrivals before dark.
