Head out from Zanzibar's north east coast to the reefs around Mnemba Atoll for a morning of snorkelling, with a chance of spotting dolphins along the way. Hotel pickup, boat transfers and a fruit break are all part of the trip, making it an easy option for anyone keen to get in the water without arranging transport themselves.
Guests are collected from hotels around Nungwi or Matemwe and driven to the launch point at Muyuni Beach, where the boat sets off toward Mnemba Atoll. The crossing often gives an early chance to spot dolphins, though sightings depend entirely on what happens to be in the area that morning.
Once anchored near the reef, the group snorkels around the atoll before a short break with fruit and water on board, followed by the return crossing and drop-off back at the hotel. The full sequence is set out step by step below.
Mnemba Atoll sits off Zanzibar's north east coast, a small sand cay ringed by one of the island's healthiest reef systems. The clear, sheltered water around the atoll supports a wide range of coral and reef fish, and the visibility here is usually better than closer to the main shoreline, which is why it remains one of the most popular snorkelling spots on Zanzibar.
The boat launches from Muyuni Beach on the north east coast, an easy stretch to reach from hotels in Nungwi and Matemwe. The crossing itself passes through open water where dolphins are sometimes seen travelling or feeding, adding an extra layer of interest to the journey out to the atoll.
Basic comfort in the water is helpful for this trip, since most of the morning is spent snorkelling from the boat, but strong swimming ability is not required. Snorkelling equipment is provided, and guests who are less confident in open water can stay closer to the boat throughout.
A reasonable level of fitness for getting in and out of the boat is useful, along with sun protection for the time spent on deck between snorkelling stops. Anyone who has never snorkelled before is still welcome to join, and the crew is happy to run through the basics before getting in the water.
The crew who run this trip know the currents and conditions around Mnemba well, choosing anchor points on the day that give the clearest water and the calmest entry for guests getting in and out of the boat. That local knowledge makes a real difference to how much of the reef and its fish life you actually get to see.
Hotel pickup, boat transfers, snorkelling gear and a fruit break are all built into the trip, so there is little to organise beyond turning up ready to get in the water. Group sizes are kept manageable rather than cramming the boat, which keeps the atmosphere relaxed from pickup to drop-off.
