Out on the water near Mnemba, this experience focuses on reef snorkelling with the chance to encounter dolphins in their natural habitat. You’ll travel by boat from the northern coast, explore clear waters, and stop at a sandbank when conditions allow. It’s a well-rounded half-day on the ocean with a mix of wildlife and snorkelling.
Starting with a pickup from your accommodation, you’ll be taken to the beach where your boat is ready. After a short briefing, you’ll head out along the coastline, with your captain scanning the water for dolphins commonly found in this area. If they’re spotted, you may have the opportunity to enter the water nearby and observe them as they move through their natural environment, always guided with a focus on respectful interaction.
Continuing on towards Mnemba Atoll, the focus shifts to snorkelling. The reefs here are known for their clear visibility and variety of marine life, making it a reliable spot for seeing tropical fish and coral formations. With equipment provided, you’ll have time in the water to explore at your own pace while guides remain close by to assist and point out interesting features below the surface.
If tides and weather conditions allow, the trip includes a stop at the Mnemba sandbank, a temporary stretch of white sand surrounded by shallow water. This gives you time to relax, take photos, and enjoy a quieter moment before the return journey. After the final cruise back, you’ll be transferred to your hotel to complete the experience.
Set just off the north-east coast of Zanzibar, Mnemba Atoll is one of the island’s most recognised marine conservation areas. Its protected status helps maintain healthy coral reefs and supports a wide range of marine species, making it a popular location for snorkelling trips.
Departing from Nungwi or Kendwa, the journey to the atoll takes you across open water with views back towards the coastline. The area itself includes reef systems, deeper channels, and occasional sandbanks, offering a varied marine environment within a relatively short distance from shore.
No previous snorkelling experience is required, and beginners are welcome. Basic swimming ability is helpful, but life jackets are available and guides are there to support you in the water if needed.
Participants should be comfortable getting in and out of a boat and spending time in the ocean. As conditions can vary, following guide instructions is important to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.
