Glide along the Mae Ping River on a stand-up paddle board through jungle-lined water north of Chiang Mai. Hotel pickup, paddle tuition, equipment, lunch and an English-speaking guide are all included on this beginner-friendly half-day on the water.
Stand-up paddle technique and safety are covered at our shop before the one-hour drive to the Mae Ngat valley put-in. Calm Mae Ping water winds through Mae Taeng Forest Reserve behind your guide, with wildlife along the banks.
You paddle along jungle-fringed banks at a relaxed pace, with the option to sit or kneel on the board if balance is tiring. Your guide stays close for coaching and keeps the group comfortable through the shaded forest section.
Lunch at a rustic plantation resort beside the river breaks up the session before hotel drop-off in the afternoon, making this a gentle first taste of stand up paddleboarding in northern Thailand.
The Mae Ping River flows north from Chiang Mai through farmland into Mae Taeng Forest Reserve, where slow-moving water and green canopy create an easy introduction to river paddling away from city traffic. Bird calls and dappled light through the forest canopy give this section a peaceful atmosphere, far removed from busy reservoir weekends.
Plantation resorts along the bank offer a relaxed lunch stop with river views. Seasonal water levels can vary slightly but the route stays beginner-friendly year round with life jackets supplied for every guest.
No previous paddle boarding experience is needed. Basic swimming confidence is helpful. Boards suit beginners up to 100 kg and water shoes in sizes 40 to 45 can be provided on request.
Bring swimwear, a change of clothes, sunscreen and insect repellent for a comfortable day on the water. Wear a hat and light cover-up for sun exposure on open sections.
We introduced hundreds of guests to stand-up paddleboarding on the Mae Ping with calm put-ins, quality boards and patient coaching from our Chiang Mai team. Hotel pickup, life jackets and a guide who knows the forest reserve section make this an easy first SUP day in northern Thailand.
We'll handle the drive, briefing and riverside lunch stop. You'll paddle at a relaxed pace with support close by, ideal if you want to try SUP without committing to a full expedition.
Hotel pickup around 8:30am brings you to the paddle shop for sign-up, equipment checks and a lesson on stand up paddle technique before the drive north to Mae Ngat valley.
A one-hour journey reaches the Mae Ping River put-in. Collect your board, paddle and life jacket, then listen to a short safety briefing on the bank before launching into calm water below the forest canopy.

Guides assess conditions on the day and adjust the route if needed. Double boards offer extra stability for nervous first-timers.
Light rain rarely stops the trip and the forest canopy can be atmospheric in wet weather. Heavy rain may affect river access; guides will reschedule or adjust timing if conditions are unsafe. Light rain often adds atmosphere without stopping the trip.
Pack a light rain layer and a dry bag for electronics if showers are forecast. A dry bag for phone and valuables is recommended. Quick-dry clothing makes the day more comfortable in green season.
Groups run from solo travellers up to eight guests with daily departures. Minimum trip is one person so you do not need a private group to join.
Small numbers keep instruction personal on the water and make it easy to ask questions about technique or wildlife along the banks.
