Cover a huge sweep of Iceland’s central highlands on a full-day Super Jeep journey designed to maximise time at key locations rather than long walks. This experience focuses on access, variety and photography-friendly stops across the Laugavegur and Fjallabak regions, guided by local expertise.
The day starts with a Super Jeep drive into the highlands, heading first towards Hekla, one of Iceland’s most active volcanoes. From here, the route continues through Dómadalur valley, an open volcanic landscape shaped by historic eruptions, before reaching the crater lakes Frostastaðavatn and Ljótipollur. Time is built in at each stop to explore and take photos rather than rushing through.
A longer stop is made in Landmannalaugar, where rhyolite mountains, lava fields and geothermal features sit side by side. You’ll have time to move around the area, take photos and, if conditions allow, see the natural bathing pool set against the lava. Walking is minimal and optional, keeping the focus on scenery rather than distance covered.
The route then follows sections of the Laugavegur trail by vehicle, travelling through Reykjadalir valley and past geothermal areas where steam vents and coloured ground mark the landscape. As the day progresses, wide views open up towards Mýrdalsjökull and Eyjafjallajökull, with further stops near Álftavatn, Emstrur and along the Markarfljót river system. The final stretch offers views into Þórsmörk and across glacial valleys before returning via the south coast lowlands.
The tour operates across the Fjallabak Nature Reserve and the Laugavegur region, areas only accessible via Iceland’s F-roads. These interior routes cut through volcanic deserts, crater fields and glacial valleys, well beyond the reach of standard vehicles.
Meeting details are confirmed after booking. Travel is by modified Super Jeep throughout, allowing access directly onto and alongside sections of the Laugavegur trail where conditions permit.
No previous highland or off-road experience is required. Participants should be comfortable spending a long day outdoors and walking short distances on uneven ground.
This experience is suitable for most people in fair general condition. Weather in the highlands can change quickly, so warm, waterproof clothing and sturdy footwear are essential.
Covering this much ground in one day requires careful route planning and local knowledge of F-road conditions. The itinerary is designed to balance distance with meaningful stops, rather than spending the day driving without time to explore.
Guides are locals with extensive experience operating Super Jeeps in the highlands, many with Search and Rescue backgrounds. This allows routes to be adapted on the day, ensuring safe access to the best locations available under current conditions.
