This luxury slackpacking journey links the Kosi Lake system with some of Maputaland’s most beautiful and least-developed beaches, combining guided coastal walking with boat travel, snorkelling and carefully chosen lodges. The route moves seamlessly between freshwater lakes, forested dunes and warm Indian Ocean shoreline, offering a rare mix of ecosystems in a single trip.
Days are active but unhurried, with luggage transferred ahead and knowledgeable local guides leading all hikes. Time is built in for snorkelling in protected reefs, swimming in clear channels, kayaking on calm lakes and learning about the traditional fish traps that have sustained local communities for generations.
Accommodation ranges from eco-friendly lakeside camps to boutique beach lodges. Seasonal highlights include turtle tracking walks during the nesting and hatching months.
The trail begins near Kosi Mouth, close to the Mozambican border, and follows the northern edge of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The route combines walking, boating and short 4x4 transfers to connect the Kosi lake system with remote southern beaches such as Black Rock, Lala Nek and Mabibi.
Two main route options are offered: a 4-night eco-focused version and a 5-night luxury option finishing at Thonga Beach Lodge. Both include guided hikes, a three-lakes boat excursion, snorkelling opportunities and daily luggage transfers, with distances designed to be achievable on soft sand and forest tracks.
This trail is designed for those who want depth rather than distance. Logistics are carefully coordinated so that each day flows naturally, allowing time to absorb the environment without feeling rushed. Expert local guides provide insight into the ecology, history and cultural significance of the Kosi lakes and surrounding coastline.
Comfort is balanced with authenticity. Accommodation has been selected for its setting and connection to the landscape, while support teams handle transfers, meals and luggage so you can focus on walking light, swimming often and enjoying the places most visitors never reach.

Accommodation includes a mix of safari-style beach camps, lakeside eco-lodges and luxury bush-and-beach lodges, all chosen for their setting and environmental ethos. Rooms are en-suite, with options ranging from canvas tents to forest-view chalets.
Meals are fully catered throughout, featuring fresh, locally inspired cuisine. On the luxury route, the final nights are spent at an exclusive beachfront lodge with additional activities and amenities included.
This trail suits family and friend groups who enjoy varied terrain and a mix of activities, over and above walkiig. Soft sand can make some sections feel more demanding, but distances are kept reasonable and regular breaks are built in.
Because the trail is fully supported with luggage transfers and guides, it works well for those wanting adventure without carrying heavy packs.
Fitness requirements are moderate. The main challenge comes from sand walking and humid conditions rather than steep climbs or technical terrain.
Guides adjust pace and rest stops according to conditions, making the experience achievable for most reasonably fit hikers.
The Kosi lake system is one of southern Africa’s most important wetland ecosystems, supporting rare fish species, migratory birds and unique plant life such as raffia palms.
Traditional fish traps are still actively used, and guides explain how these systems work and why they remain sustainable.
Yes. Snorkelling takes place in protected bays, shallow reefs and calm channels. Conditions are chosen carefully, and guides provide instruction and support where needed.
Confident swimmers will get the most out of the experience, but beginners are welcome.
May to November offers cooler temperatures and lower humidity, ideal for walking. Turtle nesting and hatching occurs roughly from November to March, making this period especially appealing for wildlife enthusiasts.
Availability is best outside school holiday periods.
Turtle sightings are seasonal and cannot be guaranteed. During nesting and hatching months, guided turtle walks significantly improve the chances of sightings.
Outside this season, the trail still offers rich marine and coastal wildlife experiences.
Absolutely. And there are often accommodation upgrades, which can be arranged on request. Extra nights can also be added at any of the lodges.
Transfers between trail sections are included and coordinated by the support team. This includes boats across the lakes and 4x4 transfers where walking routes do not connect directly. We will provide a 4x4 return transfer to the trail head / meeting point.
We can also assist with private transfers from major cities and regional airports to the area, with advance notice.
Expect a mix of marine life, bird species and smaller land mammals rather than large game. Dolphins are often seen offshore, and birdlife around the lakes is prolific.
Seasonal highlights include turtles and whales.
