Get your first taste of sailing in a safe and supportive setting. During this 90-minute session, you’ll develop fundamental skills, learning how to steer, control sails, and handle a small dinghy on calm waters. Instruction is designed for beginners, with practical guidance tailored to build confidence from the first moments on the water.
The session starts with an on-shore briefing introducing safety, boat layout, and basic sailing terminology. You’ll be guided through rigging your dinghy and shown how to use the equipment correctly, with instructors supporting beginners throughout.
Once on the water, the focus shifts to practical exercises, practising steering, adjusting sails, and learning how to respond to wind and water conditions. Instruction is continuous, providing feedback and encouragement as skills are developed.
In the final part of the session, you’ll practise sailing independently in sheltered areas, consolidating your understanding of boat control, sail handling, and water awareness. Each step is carefully structured to ensure safety while giving you a sense of autonomy afloat.
Sessions take place on a managed reservoir near Forest Row, East Sussex, offering calm, sheltered waters ideal for beginners. Designated launch points, clear safety boundaries, and supervised areas provide a structured environment for learning.
The surrounding woodland trails and public access areas provide a pleasant setting for preparation and observation. Friends or family can watch safely from shore while instruction continues on the water, ensuring focus and a safe experience.
No prior sailing experience is required, making the session suitable for complete beginners. All under-18s must be accompanied on site by an adult to ensure safety and supervision.
Participants should wear clothing suitable for getting wet and secure footwear. Arriving 15 minutes early allows time for briefing and preparation, maximising on-water practice.
Qualified instructors offer structured, hands-on teaching that focuses on practical skill development, confidence, and enjoyment. Beginners are guided every step of the way while still experiencing the independence of sailing on their own.
Small group sizes, clear water zones, and carefully planned sessions ensure every participant receives individual guidance. This approach helps build competence, self-assurance, and an appreciation for sailing in a safe, supportive environment.
