Take your surf sessions up a notch with our intermediate and advanced board hire right on the edge of Croyde Bay. Whether you're chasing clean lines or want to fine-tune your turns, we’ve got a solid line-up of boards ready to go. Pick the shape that suits your style and ride as much or as little as you like, with flexible hire slots to match.
Mini Mal – 8'0 & 7'9
Mini mals are a great step up from softboards if you're looking for more control and speed without sacrificing too much stability. The 8'0 is ideal for smoother take-offs and drawn-out turns, while the 7'9 feels a little nippier on the wave. Both work well in the varied surf at Croyde and are ideal for confident surfers wanting to progress.
Longboard – 8'6
If you love trimming, cross-stepping or just cruising down the line, the 8'6 longboard ticks all the boxes. It’s built for flow and glide, with enough volume to make paddling easy but responsive enough for those that want to throw in a few moves. Suitable for experienced riders who are familiar with handling a longer board.
Mid Length – 7'2
The 7'2 mid length is the most versatile in the range – great if you’re somewhere between a shortboard and a mini mal. It offers enough float for smaller days but can hold its own in bigger sets too. If you’re confident catching waves and like a looser feel underfoot, this one’s a solid pick.
All boards are maintained to a high standard and come with a leash. Wetsuits (S–XXL) are available to hire separately if needed, and the team is happy to help you match your board to the day’s conditions.
You’ll collect your board from Down End Car Park, sitting right above Croyde Bay at the southern end. It’s a great launch point, just a short stroll to the water with room to change and a chill-out space to watch the swell before heading in. On a good day, this side of the beach picks up plenty of fun waves with a bit of shelter from the wind.
Next to the pick-up point, The Beach Cafe is open for hot drinks, big eats, and a post-surf snack while you check your footage or compare wave scores. It’s a proper surf-friendly set-up with everything you need right where you need it.
This hire is best suited for those with previous surf experience. You should feel confident paddling out, selecting waves, and managing your board in changing conditions. If you’re under 16, an adult must be present to hire and supervise. Wetsuits and extra gear are not included with the board hire but are available as add-ons.
The team here live and breathe the surf. With years of experience on local waves and a passion for keeping things simple, friendly and well-organised, they make it easy for experienced surfers to get in the water without the faff. Whether you’re coming for a single session or planning to surf all week, they’ll help you get set up with no fuss.
All gear is sourced from quality brands and kept in excellent condition, so you’re never heading out with second-rate kit. Whether you're chatting with Simon, Tom or Kim, you’ll be getting tips and service from people who genuinely care about your surf experience — and know the beach like the back of their hand.
These boards are aimed at surfers who already have some experience in the water. You should be comfortable paddling out in varying conditions, catching unbroken waves, and turning on the face. If you’ve progressed from a softboard or beginner setup and want something more responsive, this hire is ideal.
The different board types offer something for a range of intermediate to advanced skills. If you’re not sure whether you’re ready for a longboard, mid length or mini mal, you’re welcome to ask the team for guidance. They’ll help match you to the board that best suits your size, goals, and the day’s surf.
Yes, you can. Whether you’re just squeezing in a quick session or planning to surf each day during your trip, you can select your hire duration when you book or on arrival, subject to availability. Hourly hire works well if you’re just testing out a new shape or popping in between other plans.
If you're planning multiple surfs over a few days, the daily or weekly hire options offer better value and flexibility. Once you've collected your board, it’s yours for the entire hire period — no need to return it between surfs unless agreed otherwise.
Boards are expected to get used, but damage caused by misuse or neglect will usually incur a repair fee. Common issues like dings, cracks, or fin damage are assessed by the team when the board is returned. It’s a good idea to let them know straight away if something happens during your session.
All boards are checked before and after hire, so you’ll know the condition at the start. Treat the equipment with care, avoid rocky sections of the beach, and don’t leave the board in direct sunlight or on hard surfaces for long periods. If you’ve got any concerns about handling or carrying your board, just ask.
Wetsuits are not included by default but are available to hire separately in a full range of sizes (S–XXL). These wetsuits are from reputable surf brands and maintained to ensure warmth and comfort in typical North Devon conditions. They’re a worthwhile addition, especially if you’re planning longer sessions.
If you need a wetsuit, let the team know when you book or on collection and they’ll sort you out with the right fit. It’s recommended even in summer, as the Atlantic water temperature can stay cool throughout the year, especially on windy days.
All hires are collected from Down End Car Park, situated just above the southern side of Croyde Bay on Downend Point. It’s well signposted and easy to reach via Croyde Road, with plenty of space to park and change. The location puts you right next to the beach, so you don’t have far to carry your board.
It’s also home to The Beach Cafe, which makes it a handy base for pre-surf coffee or something to eat afterwards. There’s room to chill on the grass, check the swell, and get ready without feeling rushed — perfect for setting up before or winding down after your session.
