The Hill and Moorland Leader Assessment is a specialised program designed for those passionate about leading groups in the hills and moorlands of the UK and Ireland. This 3-day assessment is the final step in achieving the Hill and Moorland Leader qualification, ideal for walkers looking to develop the necessary skills for effective group leadership in remote and upland environments.

Assessment Breakdown

• The assessment covers practical skills and knowledge required for Hill and Moorland leadership, including navigation, group management, understanding of weather, emergency procedures, and environmental knowledge.
• The assessment is run by approved providers, ensuring a comprehensive evaluation of your skills and readiness for the qualification.

Prerequisites

• You must be at least 18 years old.
• You must have a keen interest in leading groups in the hills.
• You must have attended a Hill and Moorland Leader training course (or have been granted exemption) - you can book this with our centre at the bottom of this page.
• You must have logged a minimum of 40 quality hillwalking days in at least three different upland areas of the UK and Ireland.
• You must have physically attended and completed (i.e. not online) a first aid course which involved at least two full days or sixteen hours of instruction and included an element of assessment - you can book this with our centre at the bottom of this page.
•  You must have membership in a mountaineering council (BMC, Mountaineering Scotland, or Mountaineering Ireland).
• You must register for the Hill and Moorland Leader scheme (this costs £65) - we can help you to do this.
