What to Expect

Your hike begins in the early hours, setting off from Swirls Car Park under the night sky. With your head torch lighting the way, the climb starts on well-defined paths, gradually gaining height as you move through the landscape. The route follows a steady but steep ascent, leading towards the summit of Helvellyn. The terrain is a mix of rocky paths and steep inclines, requiring a reasonable level of fitness and some experience with fell walking.

As you near the summit, the first hints of daylight start to appear, casting a soft glow over the surrounding fells. Reaching the top, you'll be greeted by incredible panoramic views, with the rising sun illuminating the peaks and valleys below. The still waters of Thirlmere add to the atmosphere, reflecting the colours of the morning sky. After taking in the views and capturing some photos, the descent follows the same route back down to Swirls Car Park, with the morning light making the return journey a completely different experience.

Helvellyn is one of the most well-known mountains in the Lake District, standing at 950 metres. The route from Thirlmere offers a challenging but rewarding ascent, providing spectacular views over the surrounding peaks and valleys.

Thirlmere itself is a peaceful reservoir, adding to the sense of isolation and peacefulness in the early hours of the morning. The starting point at Swirls Car Park provides convenient access, with facilities available at the car park, though opening times cannot always be guaranteed.

Prerequisites

Participants should have a reasonable level of fitness and be comfortable walking up to 7 miles on steep and uneven terrain. Previous experience with fell walking is beneficial, but not essential.

A head torch is required for this hike, as a significant portion of the ascent takes place in darkness.

Is there an age limit?

There is no upper age limit, as long as participants are physically able to take part safely. Some challenge walks and day experiences do allow under-18s, but they must be accompanied at all times by a parent or guardian, as there is no AALA Licence held.

What happens if the weather is bad?

Weather conditions are closely monitored using mountain-specific forecasts. If dangerous conditions are predicted, updates will be provided by 4pm the day before the event, or as early as possible within 24 hours.

As the Lake District’s weather can change rapidly, events will still proceed in rain. If conditions worsen on the day, the guide may adjust the route or, if necessary, cancel the event. In the case of cancellation, an alternative date will be offered.

What level of fitness is required?

A basic level of fitness is needed to manage being on foot for over six hours across potentially uneven terrain.

Many participants book a guide due to limited hillwalking experience, so there is no expectation to be highly hill-fit.

Before taking part, a medical waiver must be completed to acknowledge the risks associated with outdoor activities.

Are dogs allowed?

Dogs are permitted on some hikes, provided they are well-behaved and kept on a lead due to livestock in the area.

What kit do I need?

You'll need to bring some essential kit to ensure you're comfortable and prepared. Compulsory items include a waterproof jacket and trousers, walking boots with suitable socks, a rucksack, warm layers, a fleece or jumper, and a hat and gloves (waterproof ones are best). You'll also need to bring food, plenty of fluids, a mobile phone, and any personal medication.

Recommended extras include walking poles, sun cream, midge spray, gaiters, and a sit mat for added comfort.

What time does the hike start and finish?

Start times vary depending on the season. In spring and summer, hikes begin between 2am-4am, while in autumn and winter, they start between 4am-6am.

The hike typically lasts 4-5 hours, with finishing times ranging from 7am-9am in summer and 9am-11am in winter. Exact timings will be confirmed after booking.

Is there parking at the meeting point?

Yes, the hike starts and finishes at Swirls Car Park by Thirlmere. Parking costs £8, payable at the machine.

The car park has toilets, but we cannot guarantee their opening times. We recommend arriving a little early to allow time to get ready before setting off.
