Spend a half or full day exploring Dartmoor’s hills and moorland with expert guidance. Sessions focus on practical navigation, route planning, and safety awareness, giving you confidence to enjoy walks in the countryside.
Half-day sessions provide a focused introduction to hill and moorland walking. You will practise navigation with map and compass, learn to plan routes, and gain experience moving efficiently across varied terrain. Instructors guide you through hazard awareness, pacing, and adapting to weather conditions.
Full-day sessions extend the learning with longer walks over more varied terrain. Instructors demonstrate practical route planning, hazard management, and effective walking techniques. Participants have ample time to practise navigation, ask questions, and develop confidence on the hills.
Sessions are conducted across Dartmoor, with walking routes chosen to provide safe yet varied experiences. Trails include footpaths and open moorland, giving a realistic sense of hill walking conditions.
Indoor briefing areas at Dartmoor Activity Centre support the start and end of each session. Instructors provide maps and compasses for all walks and ensure participants understand terrain, weather, and safety considerations.
No previous hill walking experience is required. Participants should wear appropriate clothing for the weather and terrain and bring walking boots, water, and personal items.
Maps and compasses are provided, but personal items such as food, drinks, bags, and extra clothing must be supplied by the participant.
Experienced instructors tailor sessions to skill level and pace, ensuring safety and confidence for all participants. Sessions are structured to balance practical skill development with enjoyable walking across Dartmoor’s moorland.
Flexible half- and full-day formats allow participants to choose the session length that suits their needs. Instruction emphasises navigation, route planning, hazard awareness, and walking efficiency, creating a supportive learning environment.

Participants aged 7 and older are welcome. Instructors provide additional supervision for younger walkers to ensure safety and confidence.
The session content is adapted to ability so that everyone can follow the walk safely while practising navigation and route planning skills.
No experience is necessary. Instructors will explain route planning, hazard awareness, and navigation using maps and compasses.
Even if you have walked in hills before, sessions provide structured guidance on safe walking techniques, terrain interpretation, and risk management.
Half-day sessions focus on core navigation skills and practical walking techniques over shorter routes.
Full-day sessions cover longer routes and more varied terrain, providing extra time to practise navigation, plan routes, and understand terrain and weather impacts on walking.
Participants learn to read maps, take bearings, and follow routes using compasses.
Instructors demonstrate pacing, relocating if lost, and adjusting walking strategies based on terrain and visibility, giving practical skills to navigate safely across Dartmoor.
Half-day sessions last approximately 3–4 hours. Full-day sessions are typically 6–7 hours, including breaks and instruction time.
Time is structured to include a briefing, practical walking and navigation exercises, and a review at the end to reinforce skills learned.
Participants should bring walking boots, weather-appropriate clothing, water, and personal items such as bags.
Maps and compasses are provided, along with expert instruction on their use, but personal items, food, and drinks are your responsibility.
