Climbing the Carn Mor Dearg (CMD) Arête offers a more adventurous and challenging way to reach the summit of Ben Nevis. This route is suited for experienced hikers looking to tackle a steep ridge with some scrambling. The CMD Arête provides a thrilling perspective of the iconic mountain and is the perfect choice for those seeking an extra level of challenge in the Scottish Highlands.
The CMD Arête route starts at the North Face Car Park and takes you on an exciting ascent of Carn Mor Dearg, offering amazing views of Ben Nevis from a unique perspective. Once at the base of the Arête, you’ll scramble along a narrow ridge that presents both exciting challenges and fantastic views across the surrounding mountains. Scrambling along the ridge may require using your hands for balance, particularly on the more exposed sections. While the ridge can feel intimidating, your guide will be with you every step of the way, coaching you through any tricky parts and offering support.
As you continue along the Arête, the exposure on either side may test your head for heights, but the sense of adventure and accomplishment makes it worthwhile. After crossing the ridge, the final push to the summit of Ben Nevis takes you across rocky terrain, where you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views at the highest point in the UK. The descent follows the well-established Mountain Track, where your guide will ensure your safety while navigating the rocky paths and switchbacks.
This route requires a higher level of fitness due to the demanding nature of the climb, but the experience of conquering the CMD Arête and reaching the summit will leave you with an unforgettable sense of achievement.
