Join a small group on Miami Beach and spend two hours learning to read the water, paddle out and ride your first waves. Your instructor works through the basics with everyone together, then coaches you in the white water so you can stand up at a pace that suits the group. Sessions stay friendly and focused, with no more than six people sharing the coach.
You'll start on the sand at South Pointe with a briefing on how the ocean is moving, how to fall safely, and the paddle and pop-up before anyone gets wet. Boards are handed out there, questions get answered, and the group walks into the white water together once everyone understands the plan. Your instructor stays with you in the foam, helping you aim the board, time the paddle and stand as each wave lifts you towards the beach.
Most of the remaining time is spent repeating that cycle with notes after every attempt, so stance, balance and where you sit for the next set get tidier as the session goes on. Newer riders keep working on a clean pop-up close to shore while more confident guests get pushed towards better wave choice. You finish back on the sand, rinse off and pack up at the parking lot on Washington Avenue.
South Pointe Beach sits at the southern tip of Miami Beach, where the Atlantic meets Government Cut and the sand stays wide enough for a small group to spread out. The meeting point is the parking lot at 3 Washington Avenue, a short walk from the water, with cafes and public transport nearby if you want to arrive without a car.
Your instructor picks a stretch of beach that suits the swell and the mix of ability in the group, so you are not fighting a packed break or a dumping shorebreak. After the lesson you can rinse off, change and stay on the beach, or head back towards South Pointe Park and the marina.
You should be at least 12 years old and happy to spend two hours in the sea with a small group. The session is built for first-timers and lower intermediate surfers, so you do not need a prior lesson, only a willingness to listen on the sand and try again after you fall.
Bring swimwear, a towel and drinking water, and say if you would rather use your own board. If you have a back, heart or other medical concern that makes ocean sport a poor fit, choose another activity or speak to the team before you book.
Groups stay at six or fewer so your instructor can watch every rider and give notes that actually change the next wave, rather than shouting from a distance. Coaching comes from professional, certified instructors who start with ocean sense and safety, then move you into paddling, stance and riding at the speed of the group.
You share the session with people who are there to learn, which keeps the mood light without turning it into a crowd. The two hours are spent on Miami Beach itself, so you leave with time in real Atlantic white water, not just a talk on the sand.
You'll meet at the South Pointe parking lot at 3 Washington Avenue and join the group on the sand. Your instructor talks through how the ocean is moving, how to fall safely, and the basic paddle and pop-up before anyone gets wet. This is also when you get your board, ask questions and make sure swimwear, towel and water are ready for the session.
Once the group understands the plan, you walk the boards to the water and paddle into the white water together. Your instructor stays with you, helping you aim the board, time the paddle and stand as the foam lifts you towards the beach. Falls are part of it, and you reset quickly so the next wave feels clearer than the last.
The rest of the two hours is spent repeating the cycle of paddle, stand and ride, with notes after each attempt so you can tidy stance, balance and where you sit for the next set. More confident riders get pushed towards better wave choice while first-timers keep working on a clean pop-up. You finish back on the sand, rinse off and pack up at the parking lot.
You'll meet at the parking lot at 3 Washington Avenue, Miami Beach, FL 33139, beside South Pointe Beach. The team will share the exact spot to look for once your booking is confirmed, so you can walk from the lot to the briefing without guessing.
Plan to arrive a little early so you can park, change into swimwear and join the beach briefing on time. Public transport stops close to this stretch of Miami Beach if you would rather not drive.
You need to be at least 12 years old to join this group session. It is aimed at beginners through to lower intermediate surfers, so you can arrive as a first-timer or with a little time already spent on a board.
Your instructor keeps the group together and adjusts the coaching so newer riders work on standing up while more confident guests practise positioning and riding. If you want one-to-one attention for a younger rider, the private lesson is the better fit.
Groups are capped at six people, so your instructor can watch everyone in the water and give feedback without the session feeling crowded. Bookings also run with smaller numbers when fewer guests are signed up for that slot.
You will share the briefing and the waves with the rest of the group, which is part of the fun of a shared lesson. If you would rather have the coach to yourselves, book the private two-hour lesson instead.
Yes, your surfboard is included for the two-hour lesson, so you do not need to bring your own. Boards are chosen to suit a mixed beginner and improver group on Miami Beach.
Bring swimwear, a towel and drinking water. If you already own a board and prefer to use it, say so when you book so your instructor can plan around that.
Wear swimwear you are happy to surf in, and bring a towel plus drinking water for the beach briefing and the time in the ocean. Soft sand shoes are optional if you prefer them for the walk from the parking lot.
Leave valuables you do not need in a safe place before you arrive. The lesson is in the sea, so expect to get wet from the first paddle and pack a dry change of clothes for afterwards.
Miami Beach conditions change with the wind and swell, and your instructor reads the water before you paddle out. On quieter days the group still works through the land briefing and practises paddling, standing and catching whatever white water is there.
If the ocean is too rough for a safe group lesson, you will hear from the team about the next step. Do not assume the session is cancelled just because the waves look small from the road.
The session lasts two hours from the meeting time at the South Pointe parking lot. You start on the sand with safety, ocean awareness and the basic movements, then take the boards into the water as a group.
Most of the remaining time is spent in the white water with your instructor close by, giving notes on paddle timing, stance and where you sit for the next wave. The exact split depends on the group and the conditions that morning or afternoon.
Animals and pets are allowed on this activity when you can keep them under control at the meeting point. Check local beach rules for dogs on the sand before you travel, as those rules sit with the city rather than with the lesson itself.
Public transport runs close to South Pointe Beach, so you can arrive without driving. If you do come by car, use the parking lot at 3 Washington Avenue and walk across to the briefing spot.
No previous surfing experience is required. The group lesson is written for beginners and lower intermediate riders, and the first part of the session covers how the ocean works here, how to fall safely and how to paddle the board.
If you have already stood up a few times, your instructor will still start with the group briefing, then push you towards better wave choice and a cleaner stance once you are in the water. Tell them your level at the start so they can split attention fairly.
Bookings follow a flexible cancellation window, so you can cancel the day before the lesson and receive a refund in line with the booking terms shown at checkout. The live calendar and cut-off sit in the booking system, not on this page.
If you need to move to another time, get in touch as soon as you know. Same-day changes depend on space in another group and on the conditions, so earlier notice gives the team more options.
