A six-hour kayak hire at Salhouse Broad offers an opportunity to paddle through some of Norfolk’s picturesque waterways. With time to fully immerse yourself in the natural surroundings, this activity is perfect for exploring at your own pace.
Begin your session at Salhouse Broad, where you'll be provided with all necessary equipment, including a life vest and paddles. Following a short safety briefing, you'll set off to enjoy six hours of self-paced kayaking.
You can choose to explore the Wherry Cut, a peaceful waterway known for its wildlife, or paddle towards the Hoveton Great Broad Nature Trail. Here, you can leave your kayak for a walk through one of the area’s most unspoiled natural landscapes. Whether you're observing birds, soaking in the unique atmosphere, or simply enjoying the water, this hire gives you the freedom to chart your own course.
As your session concludes, you’ll return to the meeting point, having created your own route through the waterways of Salhouse Broad.
Set within the Norfolk Broads, Salhouse Broad lies between Wroxham and Horning. This area boasts a variety of habitats, including mature woodlands, reedbeds, and open fen, making it a haven for wildlife and a favourite spot for visitors.
Unlike many other Broads, Salhouse has a unique origin as a gravel excavation site from medieval times, shaped by glaciers during the last ice age. Today, its conservation-focused management ensures a balance between preserving its history, supporting wildlife, and maintaining visitor amenities.
Participants should feel comfortable in and around water and have the physical ability to paddle for extended periods. No prior kayaking experience is required.
Under 18's must be accompanied by an adult at all times.
Salhouse Broad is a great place to spend time in nature, with its mix of woodlands, wetlands, and open water. It's a quiet, peaceful spot where you can paddle without the crowds. The area is known for its wildlife, from birds to butterflies, and it's perfect for anyone looking to escape the busy world for a while.
The team behind Salhouse Broad works hard to look after the land and water, making sure it stays beautiful and natural for everyone who visits. By hiring a kayak, you're helping to support the Broad's conservation efforts, which keep the area healthy for both wildlife and people. Whether you're new to kayaking or a seasoned pro, this is the perfect spot to enjoy a relaxing day on the water.
Public toilets are available at the car park on Lower Street.
Please note that these facilities are approximately a 10-minute walk from Salhouse Broad itself, so plan accordingly before heading to the hire location or venturing on your activity.
Yes, Salhouse Broad is a dog-friendly location. We ask all visitors to clean up after their dogs using the designated dog waste bins available on-site.
If your dog has poor recall or is prone to chasing wildlife such as wildfowl, it should remain on a lead at all times.
Swimming is strictly prohibited at Salhouse Broad due to safety concerns. The water is used frequently by boats, and there are submerged hazards that could pose risks to swimmers.
If you have any questions or concerns about water safety, Rangers on-site are available to provide guidance.
Dogs are allowed in Canadian canoes, but it’s worth noting that this increases the chance of capsizing, so it is done at your own risk and not recommended.
Unfortunately, dogs cannot accompany you in sit-on-top kayaks, as these lack the space required for passengers.
Our sit-on-top kayaks are designed for one person only, ensuring a safe and comfortable paddling experience for individuals.
Yes, from April to October, you can enjoy a selection of refreshments at The Hungry Otter, which is conveniently located on-site.
Offerings include teas, barista coffees, cakes, ice cream, and more, making it a great place to relax after your activities.
Yes, Salhouse Broad features a children’s play area designed by CAPco.
It includes a climbing net, high walkway, climbing wall, slide, and monkey bars, offering plenty of activities to keep younger visitors entertained.
While Salhouse Broad welcomes visitors of all abilities, wheelchair access is currently limited. The boardwalks are wide enough for wheelchairs, but some paths are uneven, and shingle along the moorings can make navigation difficult.
We are actively seeking funding to improve accessibility so everyone can fully enjoy the Broad.

Fabulous! Whole experience was spot on, would definitely do again, thank you ❤️ x
Roger was very helpful and put everyone at ease. He got the right balance between the importance of health and safety and the fun of the river. We were originally hiring a day boat but this was much more fun and we would definitely do it again, and recommend it…
Really friendly and helpful and in such a pretty spot! We will definitely be returning- thank you!
