Step into the woods as a family and learn practical bushcraft through hands-on activities designed for all ages. You’ll build dens, light fires, prepare food, and work together using traditional skills in a relaxed and friendly environment. Children and adults take part equally, making it a shared learning experience from start to finish.
Everything kicks off with a welcome briefing and introduction to the woodland space. Once everyone’s settled in, you’ll get stuck into fire-lighting techniques using traditional methods and natural materials found around you. There's time to try your hand at making feather sticks and using a fire steel under supervision.
From there, the group moves on to building shelters using rope, tarps, and the surrounding forest. You’ll gather materials and problem-solve as a team to create a den that could keep you warm and dry if you had to spend a night outdoors. Everyone is encouraged to help out, whether tying knots, collecting leaves or designing the layout.
Later in the day, you’ll use your fire to help prepare a simple meal or snack, learning safe handling of pots and tools over the flames. Children will be introduced to basic knife skills, guided one-to-one where needed, with tasks like whittling or crafting simple wooden items. Axe throwing is also included as a fun and safe skill-building challenge.
The pace of the day is flexible, and activities are adapted to suit the group’s ages and interests. You can expect lots of breaks, time around the fire, and opportunities to chat or ask questions throughout the day. It’s not about how much you do—it’s about learning at your own speed while enjoying time together outdoors.
The session takes place in a peaceful private woodland in East Sussex, surrounded by natural beauty and well away from roads or buildings. The area is well-shaded with a mix of broadleaf trees, natural clearings and a central fire circle for group activities. It's fully equipped for outdoor learning with shelters, tools, and materials provided on-site.
Getting there is straightforward, with parking available nearby and clear directions sent in advance. The woodland site is managed to support sustainable learning and nature-based activities, offering families a genuine experience of life outdoors without modern distractions.
No previous experience is required—this day is designed for beginners and children, with activities explained clearly and adjusted based on confidence and ability. Parents and carers are expected to supervise their own children during tool-based or cooking activities, but support is available from the instructor at all times.
Everyone taking part should be comfortable being outdoors for the day, with suitable clothing for woodland conditions. A sense of curiosity, teamwork, and willingness to try new things goes a long way—especially when working together as a family.
The team running this session specialise in creating outdoor experiences that are welcoming, inclusive, and built around family learning. With years of experience in bushcraft instruction, they know how to engage both adults and children while keeping the atmosphere relaxed and enjoyable.
What makes these sessions stand out is their emphasis on doing things together. Rather than separating parents and kids, activities are structured so that families solve problems, build shelters, and cook side by side. You’ll go home having learned new skills, but also with great memories of achieving something outdoors as a group.
Children aged 6 and above can take part in all core activities, including tool use, fire lighting, and shelter building. The session is designed so that older children can be challenged while younger ones still feel involved and supported.
Those under 6 are also welcome to attend free of charge, but they’ll need to stay with a responsible adult at all times. While some of the tasks may not be suitable for them, the woodland setting still offers plenty of space to explore and play nearby.
Yes, you can. A standard family ticket covers two adults and two children aged 6+, with additional tickets available if you're bringing more. There’s no upper limit on family size as long as we’re informed in advance.
We’ll make sure every child gets a chance to try each activity, even if you arrive with a larger group. The instructors are used to working with mixed-age groups and will adapt sessions accordingly.
Families will need to bring their own packed lunch or picnic for the midday break. The site has a central campfire and kettle for tea and hot drinks, which are included.
There are opportunities to cook simple snacks like damper bread or bannock over the fire, and some wild treats will be shared later in the day. Let us know of any allergies in advance so we can prepare accordingly.
Activities are carefully structured to suit different abilities. Younger children may need some help with things like carving or fire lighting, but they’re never left out and are always encouraged to join in at their level.
Tasks like den building, nature spotting, and group challenges are suitable for all ages. Instructors are experienced in family work and know how to keep everyone engaged without pressure.
We recommend sturdy footwear, waterproof layers, and clothing you don’t mind getting muddy. The woodland can be uneven and the weather unpredictable, so being prepared helps you get the most from the experience.
Please also bring enough food for your family’s lunch, a water bottle for each person, and any medications you may need during the day. We provide all the tools and safety gear required.
We regularly welcome children with a range of needs, and the day can be adjusted to accommodate sensory preferences, physical needs, or behavioural support. It’s helpful if you let us know your situation when booking.
We can offer quieter spaces, extra support from staff, and adapt tasks when needed. Our aim is to make the experience inclusive for everyone attending.
Yes – this is very much a shared experience. Adults will join in with fire lighting, carving, den building, and more. The day works best when grown-ups get stuck in alongside the children.
If you’re nervous about any activity, we’ll guide you through it step by step. It's a great opportunity to learn new skills as a family in a relaxed, pressure-free environment.
Sessions go ahead in most weather conditions unless it's unsafe to do so (for example, high winds or thunderstorms). The woods provide good cover, and activities can be adjusted if needed.
We encourage families to dress for the weather and embrace the experience – fire lighting and shelter building are even more satisfying when the conditions are challenging!
There are composting toilets on site, along with water and handwashing stations. These are clean, regularly maintained, and suitable for children to use with adult help if needed.
Though the facilities are basic, they are well managed and close to the activity area. You're also welcome to bring hand sanitiser or wipes if you prefer.
