This six-day private expedition follows the main crest of the Făgăraș Mountains, Romania’s highest and most demanding mountain range. Designed for highly experienced hikers, the route links multiple 2,500 m peaks, exposed ridgelines, glacial lakes, and remote camps, requiring endurance, sure-footedness, and full commitment.
This expedition traverses the highest and most continuous alpine ridge in the Romanian Carpathians. The route includes multiple peaks above 2,500 m, narrow saddles, steep ascents and descents, and long exposed sections where weather and visibility play a major role.
You’ll carry your own tent, sleeping bag, and food throughout the trip. Fresh water is available from mountain springs, and meals are prepared on a stove carried by the guide. Routes may be adapted depending on weather and group condition.
The Făgăraș Mountains form the highest massif in Romania, stretching east–west across southern Transylvania. The range is defined by a long, continuous alpine crest, deep glacial valleys, and some of the country’s most serious hiking terrain.
Unlike lower mountain areas, this landscape is fully alpine for extended periods, with limited escape routes and rapidly changing weather, making it suitable only for experienced mountain hikers.
This expedition is only suitable for hikers with very strong fitness and proven multi-day mountain experience. You must be comfortable with long days at altitude, carrying a heavy pack, and moving confidently on exposed terrain.
Participants without appropriate equipment or experience will not be able to join the trip. The guide may modify or shorten stages if safety requires it.
Accommodation is wild camping throughout the expedition. You will carry your own tent and sleeping bag, and camps are set at high-altitude locations close to the ridge.
Facilities are minimal, with no showers or permanent infrastructure. This is a true expedition-style experience focused on self-sufficiency.
Compulsory equipment includes waterproof hiking boots, waterproof clothing, warm layers, gloves, sun protection, walking poles, tent, sleeping bag, and food supplies.
You must also carry personal items, camera, headtorch, and any medication. If you do not have the required equipment, the hike cannot go ahead.
This expedition follows a carefully planned high-ridge route shaped by years of experience in the Făgăraș Mountains. Decisions on pacing, route choice, and exposed sections are made conservatively, prioritising safety over rigid itineraries.
The focus is on responsible, low-impact mountain travel, respecting fragile alpine environments while offering access to Romania’s most demanding and rewarding hiking terrain.
Transfer from Brașov to the Sâmbăta de Sus area, with a stop to purchase food supplies. The hike begins from the Sâmbăta Valley, climbing steadily past the mountain hut and up through high alpine terrain to the Fereastra Mare and Fereastra Mică saddles. A strong ascent over Slănina Peak leads to a high camp near Fereastra Mică a Sâmbetei.
A demanding ridge day linking some of the highest points in Romania. From Portița Viștei, the route climbs to Viștea Mare Peak before continuing along the narrow crest to Moldoveanu Peak, the highest summit in the country. After returning along the ridge, the day ends with a descent to Podragu Saddle and Lake Iezerul Podul Giurgiului.
This day continues along the exposed ridge, passing Mircii Peak and the historic Nerlinger Memorial before crossing multiple high saddles. The terrain alternates between rocky ridgelines and narrow traverses, demanding constant focus and steady pacing.
A shorter day allows time to recover slightly while still covering high ground. After reaching Călțun Lake, you’ll have time to enjoy views over the Transfăgărășan Road. If conditions allow, there is an optional ascent of Vânătoarea lui Buteanu Peak.
One of the most demanding days of the expedition. The route climbs to Negoiu Peak, Romania’s second-highest summit, followed by a descent towards Cleopatra Saddle. Between Cleopatra Saddle and Șerbota Peak lies the Custura Sărății, the most technical marked section of the Făgăraș ridge. The guide will decide whether to follow this exposed route or use a safer alternative.
The final day leaves the high ridge, descending via Portița Avrigului and Șuru Saddle to Șuru Mountain Hut. From here, the trail continues down to Sebeșu de Sus village, followed by a transfer back to Brașov.
This is one of the most demanding trekking routes in Romania. Days are long, elevation is high, and terrain is often exposed and rocky.
Only experienced hikers with strong endurance and alpine confidence should consider this trip.
No rope climbing is required, but you must be comfortable on narrow ridges and exposed sections.
The Custura Sărății section is particularly demanding, and the guide may reroute if conditions or ability levels require it.
You will carry your own tent, sleeping bag, food, clothing, and personal gear. Packs are typically heavy, especially at the start of the trip.
Good load-carrying fitness is essential.
Yes. There are mountain springs along the route, so you do not need to carry large amounts of water.
You should still carry enough water capacity for long ridge sections.
Weather can change quickly at altitude. Routes and summit plans may be adjusted or shortened to ensure safety.
Flexibility is essential for this expedition.
Yes, but the trip runs as a private tour. Solo travellers must meet the same fitness and experience requirements.
Group size is kept small for safety and efficiency.
The optimal season is July to October, when snow-free conditions are most likely.
Outside this period, conditions become significantly more complex and risky.
Meals are not included. Food is cooked on a stove carried by the guide, but you must bring your own food supplies.
Guidance on suitable food choices is provided in advance.
The expedition starts and ends in Brașov, with transfers included on the first and last day.
Exact timings are confirmed after booking.
All compulsory equipment is mandatory. If you arrive without the necessary gear, the expedition cannot proceed.
This requirement is non-negotiable due to safety considerations.
