The route follows the traditional approach used by early Everest expeditions, driving through the hill town of Jiri before trekking through rhododendron forest and remote farming villages on the way toward the Khumbu. A rest day at Namche Bazaar allows time to acclimatise before the trail climbs on through Tengboche and Dingboche toward Everest Base Camp itself.
Every night is spent in a lodge or guesthouse, with meals, permits and porter support included throughout. A sunrise climb to Kala Patthar caps the high point of the trip, offering wide views over Everest and its neighbouring peaks before the descent back toward Lukla and the flight home to Kathmandu.
Running the classic Jiri approach takes real local knowledge, from village contacts to lodge arrangements along a quieter, less commercial stretch of trail. Every element of the package, from permits to porters to daily meals, is organised in advance so there is nothing extra to arrange once the trek begins.
Guides bring years of experience managing both the early overland stage and the high altitude sections near Everest Base Camp. Support continues from the airport welcome in Kathmandu through to the final farewell at the end of the trip.
The early stages of the trek pass through the mid hills east of Kathmandu, a landscape of terraced farms, pine forest and scattered villages that sees far fewer trekkers than the busier Lukla approach. A hotel pickup in Kathmandu starts the trip here, ahead of the overland drive to Jiri, giving an unhurried introduction to Nepali village life before the trail joins the main Khumbu route near Namche Bazaar.
From Namche onward, the route runs through Sagarmatha National Park, home to the Sherpa people and some of the most photographed mountains on earth. Stone villages, monasteries and prayer flag lined passes mark the final approach to Everest Base Camp itself, before a flight from Lukla returns guests to Kathmandu at the end of the trek.
Lodges on the early Jiri stretch of the route are simple, family run guesthouses with basic but clean rooms, becoming slightly more developed once the trail joins the main Khumbu route near Namche Bazaar, where hot showers and wider menus are available for a small extra charge. A welcome dinner and hotel night in Kathmandu bookend the trek.
Accommodation throughout is comfortable rather than luxurious, in keeping with the remote setting, with hearty home cooked meals and warm dining rooms each evening. A sleeping bag rated for below freezing temperatures is recommended for the colder nights higher up the route.
