This dry canyoning experience is designed for people who want to try canyoning without water sections or for those visiting during colder months. It is also suitable for anyone who cannot swim, with no previous experience required. The focus is on abseiling and moving through natural rock formations in a dry canyon environment.
Arrival at the meeting point is followed by a safety briefing and full equipment fitting before heading into the canyon area with your guide. At this stage, you can choose between two different dry canyon routes, and the guide will confirm suitability based on conditions and group ability.
Basender Canyon offers a steady introduction to abseiling with multiple descents up to around 15 metres. It moves through narrow limestone corridors, natural rock galleries and straightforward rope sections, making it ideal for building confidence with technique and progression.
Portiacha Canyon is more technical and shorter but includes fewer, larger abseils up to around 30–35 metres. The focus here is on more committed rope work with bigger drops and a slightly more exposed feel, while still being fully guided and controlled throughout.
Set within the Sierra de Guara region, these dry canyon routes sit in a landscape shaped by limestone cliffs, narrow gorges and long natural rock corridors. The environment remains dry throughout the season, making it suitable year-round for abseiling-focused canyoning.
The activity is based around the Lecina area, with easy access to both Basender and Portiacha canyons. The guide will take the group to the chosen route on the day, ensuring conditions and ability match the selected canyon experience.
A basic level of fitness is required, including the ability to walk on uneven ground and move comfortably in outdoor environments for several hours. No previous canyoning experience is needed.
Comfort with heights is important due to the abseiling sections, particularly in Portiacha where descents are longer and more exposed. This activity is also suitable for non-swimmers as there is no water involved.
Guides specialise in dry canyon environments and focus on building confidence with abseiling from the first descent. Clear instruction and step-by-step support are provided throughout the entire experience.
Both Basender and Portiacha are carefully selected based on conditions and group ability, with the guide helping you choose the most suitable option on the day. This ensures a safe but engaging introduction to dry canyoning with progression matched to comfort and skill.
Level 1 is designed for beginners, where everything is optional including jumps, slides and abseils. It’s a relaxed introduction with easy progression and no compulsory technical sections.
Level 1–2 is a full-day experience with no prior experience needed, but it can include mandatory abseils up to 20 metres depending on the canyon. It suits active people with good fitness who are used to hiking or regular outdoor activity.
Level 2 is a half-day option with no overall mandatory jumps, but it may include a compulsory 3 metre jump and abseils up to around 20–25 metres. It requires good coordination, agility and confidence moving through water and rocky terrain.
Level 3 is the most technical option and requires previous canyoning or climbing experience. Abseiling is always mandatory, and the routes are more physically demanding with longer approaches and more challenging terrain.
Dry Level 1–2 is a beginner-friendly dry canyon option with no water sections, designed for colder conditions or for those who prefer to stay out of the water.
You can explore the other available levels below.
Basender is a more progressive dry canyon with multiple abseils up to around 15 metres. It is ideal for building confidence and learning rope technique in a controlled environment.
Portiacha is more technical and includes fewer but much larger abseils up to around 30–35 metres. It feels more committed and is better suited to people comfortable with exposure and longer rope descents.
You can choose which canyon you would like to do between Basender and Portiacha. However, the guide will confirm suitability based on conditions and group ability.
This ensures safety and makes sure the chosen canyon matches the day’s environment. If needed, the guide may recommend switching options.
No previous experience is required for either canyon at Level 1–2. Both routes are designed for beginners who are comfortable with heights.
You will receive full instruction before starting and guidance throughout each abseil. The focus is on learning and controlled progression.
Abseiling is the main activity in both canyons, but it is introduced step by step with full support. Basender offers easier progression, while Portiacha includes bigger and more technical descents.
Even in Portiacha, all rope systems are managed by the guide. You are never left to handle technical setup alone.
No swimming ability is required as there are no water sections in dry canyoning. This makes it suitable for people who prefer to stay on dry terrain.
All movement takes place on rock and rope-based sections only. The focus is entirely on abseiling.
The full experience lasts around 5 hours including briefing, preparation and canyon time. It is structured as a half-day activity.
Time inside the canyon is typically 2 to 3 hours depending on the chosen route. The remainder is used for setup and return.
