Setting off in the dark hours before sunrise, this boat trip heads out from the southern coast of Zanzibar in search of wild dolphins that gather in the waters off Kizimkazi. Guests travel by traditional wooden boat with a local crew who track the pods by sight and sound, then have the chance to slip into the water with snorkel gear for a closer look beneath the surface.
The morning begins with a hotel collection while it is still dark, giving the boat time to reach the fishing village of Kizimkazi before the sun properly rises. From there, the crew heads out into open water, watching for the telltale signs of dolphins breaking the surface. Bottlenose and spinner dolphins are both regularly seen along this stretch of coast, often travelling in pods and riding the boat's wake.
Once dolphins are located, the boat slows so guests can watch them at a respectful distance, with time in the water for those who want to snorkel or swim nearby when conditions allow. The return leg gives space to enjoy the coastal scenery and the early light over the Indian Ocean before heading back to the mainland and on to the hotel.
Kizimkazi sits on the southern tip of Zanzibar, a fishing village where wooden dhows still line the beach and the pace of life follows the tides rather than the clock. The waters just offshore are part of a channel that dolphins pass through daily, which is why so many boat trips depart from this stretch of coast rather than further north.
Away from the water, the village keeps its working character, with nets drying on the sand and small boatyards tucked along the shoreline. The drive down from central Zanzibar passes through spice farms and rural villages, giving visitors a glimpse of island life well beyond the resort strip before the boat even leaves the beach.
No previous boating or snorkelling experience is needed to join this trip. Guests who would rather stay on the boat and watch the dolphins from the deck are just as welcome as those keen to get in the water, and the crew are happy to talk through what to expect before departure.
A reasonable comfort level in open water helps for anyone planning to snorkel, since the sea can have a gentle swell even on calm mornings. Anyone prone to seasickness may want to take precautions beforehand, and it is worth packing a light layer for the cooler start before the sun is fully up.
The early departure time is deliberate: dolphins are most active and easiest to find in the calm waters of the first few hours after sunrise, before the wind picks up and other boats arrive. Timing the trip this way gives guests a genuinely better chance of a close sighting rather than a rushed midday search.
Local crew who grew up around Kizimkazi know these waters well, reading the water for signs of a pod long before it would be obvious to a visitor. That knowledge, combined with a traditional boat suited to the shallow coastal waters, makes for a trip that feels personal rather than mass produced.
