Hike through Doi Suthep highland jungle to a Hmong hill tribe village, then descend by mountain bike to Huay Tueng Thao lake on a full-day combo adventure from Chiang Mai. Towering Mai Yai trees, valley viewpoints and a lakeside lunch make this one of the most varied single-day trips in the national park.
Bike fitting at our adventure base and a shuttle into the national park start the day with an uphill hike through cool highland jungle toward the Hmong village. Bikes and helmets await at the village for the afternoon descent to the lake.
Your bikes are ready at the summit for a fast two-hour descent through the national park to Huay Tueng Thao lake at 370m. Cool downhill riding opens views across the Mae Ping valley before a well-deserved late lunch lakeside with optional swim.
Guides support the group on the uphill trail and run a full safety briefing before the descent, so you earn the downhill without needing advanced technical skills.
Doi Suthep National Park protects montane forest and highland communities above Chiang Mai. The hike reaches the summit zone near Doi Pui where Hmong villages maintain traditional life at 1,400m with views across the Mae Ping valley on clear days.
Cool jungle trails and plantation tracks link the village to the lakeside finish, a vertical journey from highland forest to warm valley water in a single day. Huay Tueng Thao is a recreation lake popular with locals for swimming and bamboo-shore dining. The same-day combination of summit jungle walk and lakeside finish sets this apart from shuttle-only downhill rides.
Moderate fitness is enough for the steady three-hour uphill hike if you pace yourself. Good walking shoes with firm soles are essential on jungle trails. For the bike section you should be comfortable on off-road surfaces for a couple of hours.
No technical climbing or advanced biking skills are required. Wear layers for the cool summit, bring sunscreen for the descent, and pack swimwear for the lake stop. Guides support the group on both the hike and descent.
We've been running mountain bike days from our Chiang Mai adventure base for years, with hotel pickup, quality bikes and English-speaking guides who know every turn on Doi Suthep and beyond. You get a proper safety briefing, skills check and vehicle support so you can focus on the ride rather than logistics.
Small groups and flexible pacing mean we can match the day to your ability, whether you're building confidence on your first downhill or chasing technical singletrack. Meet us in town and we'll handle the shuttles, lunch stops and kit from there.
Hotel pickup around 9:30am brings you to the adventure base for safety briefing, bike selection and gear fitting. Guides explain the hike-then-bike format and shuttle plan before driving up Doi Suthep National Park toward Monthatan waterfall.
A 30-minute drive into the national park reaches the trek starting point at Monthatan waterfall. From here you hike for two or more hours through lush forest jungle toward the summit Hmong hill tribe village at 1,400m, passing waterfalls and giant Mai Yai trees indigenous to the area.
Around three hours after starting you reach the village for a light snack lunch and bike safety briefing. Your bikes and gear are waiting so you can rest legs before the afternoon descent through the national park on flowing jeep tracks with valley viewpoints.
The two-hour downhill ride winds through plantations and forest toward Huay Tueng Thao lake with cool breezes and wide Mae Ping valley views. Gravity rewards the morning climb on double-track trails graded moderate for confident beginners and improvers.
A well-deserved late lunch with cool drinks keeps you at the lake where many guests take a dip in the calm water. A short truck ride returns you to your Chiang Mai hotel around 5:30pm after a full day combining summit hiking and downhill mountain biking.
The hike passes through highland jungle with towering indigenous Mai Yai trees and waterfalls near Monthatan before reaching the Hmong hill tribe village at the summit of Doi Pui National Park. Valley views open up as you gain elevation.
Your bikes and gear are transported to meet you at the village so you hike with a lighter load. The village offers a cultural stop and rest before the afternoon descent.
The day includes roughly three hours of steady uphill hiking covering 11 km through highland jungle to the Hmong village at 1,400m, followed by about two hours of downhill mountain biking for 14 km to the lake. Overall you gain around 1,000m on foot then drop 1,200m on the bike. Moderate fitness is enough if you pace the hike.
The bike section is mostly downhill on jeep tracks rather than technical singletrack. Pace yourself on climbs and drink water regularly throughout the day. Guides adjust rest stops to match the group so everyone can enjoy the scenery without rushing.
No previous mountain biking experience is strictly required for the downhill section if you are comfortable on uneven surfaces. The hike is steady on jungle trails rather than technical scrambling, though good walking shoes are essential. Guides run a bike safety briefing at the village before the descent.
Nervous riders get support on the jeep tracks down to the lake. Your guide runs a safety briefing at the start and stays with the group throughout. Ask questions at any time if you want tips on technique or pacing.
The minimum age is 14 years due to the length of the hike and the off-road bike descent. Younger teens should be confident hikers and comfortable on a bike for several hours.
Be sure your child is comfortable with the duration and terrain. Correctly sized equipment is provided on the day where applicable.
Pickup is from hotels and guesthouses in Chiang Mai city centre around 9:30am. After briefing and bike fitting at the adventure base, a shuttle takes you to Monthatan waterfall trailhead in Doi Suthep National Park. You return to your accommodation around 5:30pm after a late lunch at the lake.
Share your hotel details Share your accommodation details ahead of the trip so the driver can find you easily. Allow a few minutes either side of the stated pickup window.
A light snack lunch is served at the Hmong village summit before the bike descent, and a more substantial late lunch with cool drinks awaits at Huay Tueng Thao lake after the ride. Both are included in the trip price. Bring extra snacks if you like more energy during the hike.
Drinking water is provided during the day. Dietary preferences can usually be accommodated with advance notice. Bring a small snack if you like extra energy between scheduled meal stops.
The bike descent takes about two hours covering 14 km through the national park on jeep tracks with wide views over the Mae Ping valley. Gravity does the hard work after the morning climb, with cool breezes on the downhill run. Guides set pace for the group and stop at viewpoints.
The route is graded moderate rather than advanced downhill. Seat height and brakes are checked before you set off. Bring firm closed-toe shoes and sunglasses for comfort on longer riding sections.
Many guests swim at Huay Tueng Thao after the late lunch when the weather is warm. The lake is a popular local spot with calm water near shoreside restaurants.
Changing facilities are basic near the water, so a sarong or cover-up is useful. Towels are not always provided, so bring your own if you plan to swim.
The trip runs in most conditions. Jungle trails can be slippery in rain and guides adjust hiking and riding pace for safety. Heavy weather may affect scheduling at the guide's discretion.
Light rain often adds atmosphere without stopping the trip. Pack a light rain layer and a dry bag for electronics if showers are forecast. Wear good walking shoes and pack a rain jacket in wet season.
Arrive with sunscreen, plenty of water and comfortable clothing suited to the activity. Wear closed shoes with good grip, and pack a light rain layer if showers are possible during your visit to northern Thailand.
Leave bulky luggage at your hotel and bring only a small day pack for personal essentials. Share your accommodation name and contact number ahead of the trip so morning pickup runs smoothly on the day of your adventure.
