Gosforth

Gain a clear understanding of how your scuba equipment works and how to keep it in excellent condition. This practical course focuses on assembling gear correctly, identifying potential problems, and maintaining your setup for safe, comfortable dives. It’s ideal for divers looking to feel more confident and independent when handling their own kit.
Your training begins with a guided session on the essential parts of scuba equipment. You’ll explore how each component fits together, what checks to carry out before every dive, and how to recognise common problems that could affect performance. Instructors take time to explain how small details—like hose routing or BCD adjustment—can make a noticeable difference to safety and comfort underwater.
The second half of the course moves into the water, where you’ll assemble and test your equipment under supervision. This session gives you a chance to feel how properly configured gear behaves in real conditions. Afterward, you’ll learn post-dive maintenance techniques, including rinsing, drying, and storage methods to extend the life of your setup. By the end, you’ll have the confidence to prepare, maintain, and care for your own gear with ease.
The course takes place in Gosforth, within a dedicated dive training facility equipped for both classroom and confined water instruction. It provides a relaxed, well-structured environment that encourages hands-on learning at your own pace.
Situated close to the North Sea coast and several dive retailers, Gosforth offers easy access to professional servicing workshops. This makes it a great base for divers who want to understand more about equipment performance both in and out of the water.
Anyone with an entry-level scuba certification or equivalent can enrol. It’s particularly helpful for new divers who want to feel more comfortable managing their kit and preparing for future courses. The minimum age is 10, and participants should be able to take part in basic pool sessions.
Prior experience with equipment setup isn’t required. Instructors will explain each concept clearly, ensuring that even those with limited experience feel supported and confident throughout the course.
Training here is designed around practical experience and personal guidance rather than classroom lectures. Each student is encouraged to handle and test their equipment throughout the course, building a deeper understanding through doing, not just listening.
Small group sizes and approachable instructors ensure you receive plenty of individual support. Every session is focused on improving your comfort and safety underwater, helping you get the best out of your gear on every future dive.
You’ll work with standard recreational scuba gear including tanks, regulators, gauges, and buoyancy devices. Instructors will guide you through each component, explaining its function, how to assemble it correctly, and what to check before every dive. This hands-on approach ensures you understand how each piece contributes to safety and performance underwater.
By handling the equipment yourself, you gain practical experience that builds confidence. You’ll see how adjustments to your setup affect comfort, balance, and efficiency in the water, making it easier to manage your gear independently in future dives.
All necessary equipment is provided for the course, allowing you to focus entirely on learning the setup and maintenance procedures. If you have your own gear, you’re welcome to bring it along for personal instruction. Instructors will help you identify fit issues, make adjustments, and improve overall performance.
Using your own kit during the course is an excellent way to familiarise yourself with it. You’ll learn to maintain and assemble your personal gear safely, ensuring that every dive feels more comfortable and controlled, whether in pool sessions or open water.
Yes, it’s ideal for divers who have completed an entry-level certification and want to feel more confident handling their equipment. The course is paced for those with little to no prior maintenance experience, with instructors offering step-by-step guidance and plenty of practical demonstrations.
Even more experienced divers find this training valuable. It highlights finer details of setup, maintenance, and troubleshooting that enhance safety, comfort, and efficiency on every dive, helping you develop a deeper understanding of your scuba equipment.
Successful completion of the course awards you an Equipment Techniques Diver certificate. This recognises that you understand how to assemble, maintain, and care for scuba gear properly, an essential skill for independent and safe diving.
The certification is also a stepping stone for further training. It demonstrates readiness for more advanced courses where understanding equipment is critical, providing a strong foundation for technical or specialised diving pathways.
Learning to correctly assemble, adjust, and maintain your equipment significantly improves your safety underwater. You’ll be able to spot potential issues early, prevent malfunctions, and enjoy greater comfort and efficiency during every dive.
Beyond safety, this course enhances your confidence and independence. By knowing how to handle your gear proficiently, you can focus on the experience of diving itself, making each adventure more enjoyable and stress-free.
