Explore one of Puerto Plata’s most recognised natural attractions with a guided canyon descent through the Damajagua waterfalls. This half-day experience combines a forest hike with natural limestone slides and freshwater pools. Ideal for active travellers who want a focused waterfall adventure without additional add-ons.
The experience begins with pick-up in Puerto Plata or direct arrival at the meeting point. From the city, the drive to the Damajagua reserve takes approximately 25 minutes, heading inland towards the Northern Mountains. After arrival and equipment fitting, you’ll receive a safety briefing before starting the hike.
The uphill jungle walk takes around 25–30 minutes along a maintained but natural trail. Expect uneven terrain and warm tropical conditions. Once at the top, the descent begins. Moving through a series of limestone formations, you’ll slide down smooth rock chutes, swim through clear pools and, if you choose, jump from rock ledges into deeper sections of water. Guides supervise each stage and explain safe entry points before you proceed.
After completing the canyon route, you’ll return to the entrance area and begin the journey back to Puerto Plata. A short stop is made at a local cigar and souvenir store for approximately 10 minutes before drop-off.
The 27 Charcos de Damajagua reserve is located approximately 25–30 minutes from central Puerto Plata, set within a protected mountain area. The site is known for its freshwater canyon system shaped by limestone rock formations over centuries.
Puerto Plata sits on the north coast of the Dominican Republic, bordered by mountains and the Atlantic Ocean. The Damajagua area offers a clear contrast to the coastline, providing a forest and river-based environment ideal for canyon-style exploration.
Participants must be at least 10 years old and comfortable in water. A moderate level of fitness is required due to the uphill hike and movement over natural rock surfaces.
This activity is not recommended for individuals with back problems, heart conditions or for pregnant travellers. You should be confident walking on wet terrain and able to follow safety instructions carefully.
Local knowledge shapes the structure of this experience. Growing up in Puerto Plata means understanding how to manage timing, weather conditions and group flow to create a smooth, well-organised visit to one of the region’s most popular natural sites.
Years of experience in travel and guiding ensure that safety, coordination and clear communication remain priorities. The aim is to provide direct access to one of the north coast’s most recognisable landscapes while maintaining a personal and well-managed approach throughout the day.
No previous canyoning experience is required. Guides provide a full safety briefing before the hike and supervise each section of the descent through the waterfalls.
You should feel comfortable in water and confident following instructions. The route is structured to be accessible to active beginners.
The hike to the top of the waterfalls takes approximately 25–30 minutes uphill. The trail is natural and includes uneven ground and light elevation gain.
While not technical, it does require moderate fitness and the ability to walk steadily in warm conditions.
No. Jumping into the pools is optional. In several areas, you can enter the water via natural slides or safer access points instead of jumping.
Guides explain each section clearly so you can choose the level of challenge that suits you.
Wear swimwear underneath comfortable clothing suitable for hiking. Quick-dry fabrics are recommended, along with closed-toe footwear with good grip.
Water shoes are strongly advised for moving safely over limestone surfaces but are not included.
Pool depth varies depending on the section and seasonal water levels. Some areas are suitable for jumping, while others are shallow entry points.
Guides indicate safe entry spots and explain depth conditions before each descent.
The minimum age is 10 years. Children must be comfortable in water and able to manage the hike independently.
Parents should consider their child’s confidence with heights and wet surfaces before booking.
This activity is not recommended for those with back problems, heart conditions or for pregnant travellers. The route includes sliding and potential impact when entering water.
Participants should be in generally good health and capable of moderate physical activity.
The activity operates in most weather conditions, but safety decisions depend on river flow levels.
If water conditions are considered unsafe, the activity may be adjusted or rescheduled.
The canyon descent typically takes between 1.5 to 2 hours depending on group size and pace.
Time includes sliding, swimming and waiting at natural pools while the group progresses through each section.
