Designed for young surfers ready to progress beyond whitewater, this session helps children aged 11–16 build confidence, improve board control and learn to ride open-face waves safely. Each lesson combines fun, encouragement, and focused coaching so riders can develop their technique in a structured yet relaxed environment.
You’ll start by meeting your coach at the shoreline, where wetsuits, boots and softboards are fitted. A short warm-up on land helps young surfers practise paddling, pop-ups and stance. Coaches explain the session structure in a friendly, approachable way so every child understands the objectives and feels confident before entering the water. Safety, warmth, and enjoyment are prioritised throughout, helping kids feel comfortable in the slightly more challenging reef environment.
Paddling out onto the reef, the children experience slow, peeling waves that allow plenty of time to practise take-offs and trimming. Instructors give individual attention, correcting positioning, foot placement and timing in a clear, encouraging manner. Children progress at their own pace, with repeated opportunities to try new skills and consolidate their learning while enjoying a sense of accomplishment.
Later in the session, attention turns to linking movements, maintaining balance through longer rides and learning to anticipate wave shape. The relaxed pace ensures children remain motivated and engaged, giving them confidence in their abilities and leaving them excited to continue improving. Plenty of praise and fun moments make the lesson memorable, creating lasting positive experiences both in the water and for families watching from the shoreline.
Set in Newbridge, Edinburgh, the session takes place at a purpose-built surf lagoon that provides consistent waves and a controlled environment. The Cove offers a scenic and secure space ideal for children, with clear sightlines for parents to watch and enjoy the session. Surrounding paths, open areas and nearby cafés make the whole visit smooth and family-friendly, giving plenty to do before or after surfing.
Travel to the centre is simple via car, bus or tram, with free on-site parking and convenient drop-off points for families. The area is close to Edinburgh airport and motorway connections, making it accessible for local and visiting surfers. Clear signage and dedicated paths ensure that navigating the site, changing facilities, and viewing areas is stress-free and safe for children and adults alike.
Children should already be able to catch and ride whitewater waves confidently, pop up on their board and demonstrate basic paddling skills. Comfort in the water is essential, as the session introduces slightly more dynamic reef waves while still keeping learning controlled.
A positive attitude and willingness to try new movements are highly recommended. Kids do not need previous experience on open-face waves, as this session gradually introduces these skills under the guidance of friendly and experienced instructors.
The centre delivers world-class coaching with a focus on confidence, fun, and safety. Instructors are experienced in working with young surfers and structure lessons to balance progression with enjoyment, making each session both educational and exciting. Every aspect of the lesson is carefully planned to give children the best possible learning experience in a safe, supportive environment.
Attention to detail extends beyond instruction. From tailored wetsuits and softboards to consistent monitoring of conditions and personalised feedback, every element is designed to ensure children feel safe, motivated and inspired. Parents can relax knowing their child is in a professional, welcoming environment with a proven record of helping young surfers develop skills quickly and confidently.
