Leave the beaten track on a full-day jungle river kayak through Chiang Dao valley north of Chiang Mai. Paddle creek-like bends on the Ping past bamboo forest, wetlands and farmland beneath the fin-shaped Chiang Dao mountain, with guide coaching, Thai lunch and hotel pickup included on a route tuned to seasonal water levels.
Activity briefing, life jacket and helmet fitting at our adventure base follow hotel pickup around 8:30am. A 75-minute shuttle north reaches the Chiang Dao put-in chosen for safe water levels on the day.
On the water you paddle downstream through undisturbed jungle and farmland on a creek-like section that suits first-time river kayakers with coaching as well as improvers building skills. Your guide adjusts the pace and line choice to the group's experience throughout.
Thai lunch breaks up the day before more paddling on seasonal water levels and the afternoon shuttle back to Chiang Mai around 4:30pm.
Chiang Dao valley draws nature lovers from around the world, yet few explore it by kayak off the main tourist routes. The Ping here winds through secluded bamboo forest and wetlands where your pace matches the jungle rhythm rather than a minibus schedule.
Massive Chiang Dao mountain dominates the skyline throughout the drive and paddle, anchoring one of northern Thailand's most distinctive valley landscapes. Creek-like bends and seasonal wetlands add variety to the forest and farmland sections. It's a valley best appreciated slowly, and a kayak is one of the finest ways to see it.
Improver level suits paddlers with some kayak confidence or motivated beginners ready for a full day on moving water. Guides coach throughout and many guests try river kayaking for the first time here.
Minimum age 14 reflects the stamina and focus needed on creek-like bends. Good fitness helps on a 3+ hour paddle day. Wear quick-dry clothes, secure footwear and bring sun protection and a change of clothes.
Our Chiang Mai team runs river and lake kayaking year round, with hotel pickup, quality boats and guides who read northern Thailand's water levels every week. You'll get a thorough on-water briefing and coaching before we launch, so beginners feel supported and experienced paddlers still get a proper day out.
We keep groups small, choose put-ins for the season and handle lunch and transfers as part of the day. We're local specialists who've been sharing these rivers and reservoirs with guests for years.
Hotel pickup around 8:30am brings you to the adventure base in central Chiang Mai for activity briefing, life jacket and helmet fitting and kayak assignment. Guides explain the day's route and seasonal put-in options before you head north toward Chiang Dao valley.
An approximately 75-minute drive north reveals Chiang Dao mountain fin-shaped on the horizon as you approach the valley put-in. Guides choose the launch point for safe water levels before you unload kayaks and run final paddle checks on the bank.
Your 3+ hour kayak trip takes you downstream through undisturbed jungle, birdlife and farmland on a creek-like Ping River section. Guides coach stroke and line choice throughout, making this a strong first river kayak for many guests as well as a skill-building day for improvers.
Thai lunch arrives midway through the day. Remind your guide of any dietary restrictions so the kitchen can accommodate where possible. After eating you return to the water for more paddling through Chiang Dao's secluded river scenery.
After completing the kayaking section you load boats and gear for the shuttle back to Chiang Mai hotels. Return times vary with water levels and group pace; guides never hurry anyone down the river, so plan evening activities accordingly.
Previous flat-water or river kayaking experience helps, though many guests try river kayaking for the first time on this trip with guide coaching throughout. The creek-like Ping through Chiang Dao jungle rewards attentive paddling without whitewater rapids. Guides adjust the put-in for seasonal water levels so the route stays safe and enjoyable for mixed ability groups.
Your guide runs a safety briefing at the start and stays with the group throughout. Ask questions at any time if you want tips on technique or pacing.
The minimum age is 14 years for paddlers in their own kayak on this improver route. Younger children from 6 can join on shorter beginner trips in a double kayak with an adult on other Mae Ping products. Teens should be fit enough for 3+ hours on moving water and comfortable following guide instructions on creek-like bends.
Be sure your child is comfortable with the duration and terrain. Correctly sized equipment is provided on the day where applicable.
Expect 3+ hours on the water within a full day from 8:30am pickup, with a Thai lunch break between paddling sections. Return to your hotel is around 4:30pm though guides never rush anyone down the river.
Leave evening plans flexible as take-out times vary with water levels and group pace.
Pickup is from hotels and guesthouses in Chiang Mai city centre around 8:30am. You stop at the adventure base for briefing, life jacket and helmet fitting and boat assignment before the drive north to Chiang Dao valley. Share your hotel details ahead of your trip for smooth morning collection.
Share your accommodation details ahead of the trip so the driver can find you easily. Allow a few minutes either side of the stated pickup window.
Yes, Thai lunch is included between kayaking sections. Mention any dietary restrictions to your guide at the lunch stop so the kitchen can accommodate where possible. Dietary preferences can usually be accommodated with advance notice.
Bring a small snack if you like extra energy between scheduled meal stops. After lunch you head back on the river for more paddling before the afternoon shuttle to Chiang Mai.
Wear swimwear or quick-dry clothing, secure water shoes if you have them and pack sunscreen, hat, repellent and a full change of clothes. Wear comfortable athletic clothing and closed shoes suitable for the activity. A small day pack is enough for water, sunscreen and personal essentials.
Jungle sections can be shady but open farmland stretches need sun protection. A dry bag for valuables is useful.
Chiang Dao mountain rises fin-shaped above the valley, visible for miles as you drive north. On the water you paddle through undisturbed jungle, farmland and creek-like river bends with birdlife and wildlife along the banks.
It is a highlight for nature lovers who want to leave conventional sightseeing behind and move at river pace.
Seasonal water levels change the character of the Ping through Chiang Dao. Guides choose the exact put-in for safe, enjoyable paddling rather than running a fixed launch regardless of conditions.
Wet season brings more flow; drier months may mean more technical creek navigation. Both can be rewarding with coaching.
Light rain often enhances the jungle atmosphere. Heavy rain or unsafe levels may lead to rescheduling or put-in changes at the guide's discretion. Light rain often adds atmosphere without stopping the trip.
Pack a light rain layer and a dry bag for electronics if showers are forecast. Northern Thailand heat and humidity can be tiring, so hydrate often and use sun protection even on cloudy days.
Arrive with sunscreen, plenty of water and comfortable clothing suited to the activity. Wear closed shoes with good grip, and pack a light rain layer if showers are possible during your visit to northern Thailand.
Leave bulky luggage at your hotel and bring only a small day pack for personal essentials. Share your accommodation name and contact number ahead of the trip so morning pickup runs smoothly on the day of your adventure.
