Charlie was great. He assessed the ability and confidence levels in the group very well, so that everyone in our mixed group left feeling they'd been challenged enough to feel they'd achieved something. I would really recommend Charlie.

This session takes you into a hidden world of waterfalls, pools, and narrow gorges where you’ll learn to abseil, swim, and scramble through the canyon. It’s an ideal introduction for those new to canyoning, set in a location just a short distance from the North Coast 500, offering views of Beinn Eighe. The group size is kept small to provide personalised guidance and ensure safety throughout.
The session begins with a 40-minute walk to the top of the canyon, where the instructor will explain how to read the terrain and prepare you for the descent. You’ll be introduced to basic abseiling techniques and safety protocols, with full support as you abseil down each waterfall. Throughout the descent, there are natural pools for swimming and sections to scramble over rocks, combining physical challenge with careful navigation.
As you move through the canyon, the instructor will teach you how to handle different features such as narrow passages and slippery surfaces, focusing on efficient and safe movement. The group will stay close together for guidance and encouragement, with plenty of opportunities to ask questions and build confidence. This makes it perfect for first-timers and anyone looking to improve their canyoning skills in a supportive environment.
The final part of the session involves a return walk from the bottom of the canyon, giving time to reflect on the experience and enjoy the surrounding landscape. The whole trip balances adventure with the chance to connect with the environment, encouraging respect for the natural setting and awareness of low-impact outdoor practices.
The canyon is located near Torridon, an area known for its dramatic landscapes and mountain views, just a short distance from Gairloch and easily accessible from the North Coast 500 route. This region offers a mix of rugged terrain and clear freshwater pools, making it ideal for canyoning activities. The area’s remoteness helps preserve its natural character and provides a peaceful setting for adventure.
Nearby villages offer basic amenities and accommodation options, with the surrounding Highlands providing a rich variety of walking trails and outdoor pursuits. The location’s combination of accessibility and wildness ensures you get the best of both worlds—thrilling activity in a beautiful environment.
Participants should be comfortable with heights and able to swim confidently, as the activity involves abseiling and moving through water. A reasonable level of fitness is required for the walks to and from the canyon and the physical nature of scrambling. Children under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
No previous canyoning experience is necessary as full instruction and equipment are provided, but a positive attitude and willingness to follow safety guidance are essential.
The instructor has over ten years of experience guiding outdoor activities across the world and holds a wide range of relevant qualifications, including summer and winter mountain leader certificates, climbing instructor training, and coasteering and canyon guiding qualifications. This expertise ensures a professional and safe experience tailored to each participant’s ability and confidence.
With a strong focus on sustainability and environmental awareness, the operation aims to minimise impact on the local landscape while offering unique opportunities to experience the Highlands’ natural features. The combination of expert guidance, small group sizes, and respect for the environment creates a high-quality session that’s both enjoyable and responsible.
Participants should wear comfortable clothing suitable for getting wet and active, such as a quick-drying base layer or swimwear underneath the provided wetsuit. Avoid heavy cotton clothing as it can become uncomfortable when wet. If you have your own wetsuit and canyoning boots, you’re welcome to bring them along.
Footwear is important for safety and grip. Watersports trainers can be hired for £5 if you don’t have suitable shoes, but it’s best to bring sturdy trainers or canyoning shoes if you have them. Avoid flip-flops or sandals as they won’t provide enough support.
The session requires a reasonable level of fitness as you will be walking to the canyon, abseiling, scrambling over rocks, and swimming in natural pools. The initial walk to the canyon top takes around 40 minutes on uneven terrain, so good stamina and mobility are helpful.
During the descent, you’ll use upper and lower body strength to navigate obstacles, but the instructor will provide support and techniques to make this manageable. It’s suitable for anyone who is active and confident in moving through water and rocky environments.
The minimum age for this session is 12 years, and anyone under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Children should be confident swimmers and comfortable with heights, as the activity involves abseiling down waterfalls and swimming in pools.
The instructor will ensure the pace and challenges are appropriate for younger participants, but parents should assess their child’s confidence and physical ability before booking. Safety and enjoyment for all group members are the top priority.
The session can usually go ahead in most weather conditions since wetsuits and safety gear provide protection against cold and rain. The Highlands are known for changeable weather, so it’s best to come prepared with warm layers for before and after the activity.
If conditions are deemed unsafe, such as severe storms or flooding, the session will be postponed or rescheduled. Safety always comes first, and the instructor will keep you informed about any changes.
No prior canyoning experience is necessary. The instructor will teach you all the skills required, including how to use the equipment, abseil safely, and move through the canyon features. The session is designed to introduce beginners to the sport in a supportive environment.
If you have some experience, you’ll still benefit from expert guidance and learning new techniques to improve your confidence and ability. The focus is on safe enjoyment for all skill levels.
A reasonable comfort with heights and swimming ability is necessary due to the nature of canyoning, which involves abseiling down waterfalls and swimming in natural pools. If you feel unsure, discuss this with the instructor before booking so they can advise whether the activity is suitable for you.
The instructor supports participants throughout and can offer techniques to build confidence. However, if you do not feel comfortable with these elements, this session may not be the best fit.
