Day 1: Pack, Prepare, and Practice
The adventure begins at 10am as you prepare and pack your kit for the trip. The morning is spent getting everything ready, followed by an afternoon on Loch Insh to refine your canoeing techniques. You'll learn vital skills for the days ahead before heading onto the river for a gentle paddle to your first wild camping spot.
Day 2: Aviemore to Boat of Balliefurth
Starting from Aviemore, you'll paddle through amazing scenery with small rapids to build confidence. As you move beyond the Cairngorms, the landscape transitions to the Kincardine Hills, with opportunities to spot Sand Martins and possibly badgers at night. The day includes a stop in Boat of Garten for refreshments, followed by a peaceful afternoon paddle along winding river bends and ending with a campfire at your evening site.
Day 3: Boat of Balliefurth to Cragganmore
The pace picks up as you head into a stretch with more challenging rapids. From Grantown-on-Spey, you'll tackle slightly bigger rapids and enjoy the views of the Cromdale Hills and lush pine forests. Keep an eye out for wildlife, including elusive pine martens. The day is filled with continuous paddling and preparation for the more technical sections ahead.
Day 4: Cragganmore to Craigellachie
This stretch is packed with fast-flowing water and some of the most famous rapids on the river, including the Washing Machine and Knockando Rapids. The volume and speed increase, providing a thrilling challenge as you navigate the river towards Aberlour, where the rapids start to ease, and you make camp.
Day 5: Craigellachie to Spey Bay
The final stretch is a mix of gentle rapids and calm waters as the river takes you to Spey Bay. If the tides and conditions allow, you’ll paddle into the sea to conclude the adventure. It’s a rewarding end to a fantastic journey down the Spey.
