Cover more ground and see a wider slice of the south coast on this longer buggy ride that blends gravel tracks, river flats and open viewpoints. Designed as an easy, steady-paced experience, this tour gives you time to settle into the buggy and explore the varied terrain between Eyjafjallajökull and the Þórsmörk area.
The tour begins at the main base on the south coast with a safety briefing and a walkthrough of the buggy controls. You’ll be kitted out with a helmet and waterproof outer suit before setting off. The buggies are fully automatic and road-legal, making them straightforward to drive even if you’ve never been off-road before.
Once underway, the route heads into the wide landscapes between Fljótshlíð and Eyjafjallajökull. You’ll drive across gravel roads and sand plains, pass waterfalls, and cross shallow streams where conditions allow. The terrain is varied but approachable, giving you a feel for Icelandic off-road driving without technical difficulty.
Several stops are built into the ride, including viewpoints looking towards Seljalandsfoss and out to the Vestmannaeyjar (Westman Islands) in clear weather. The pace remains relaxed throughout, with guides riding alongside the group and sharing insight into the area and the landscapes you’re driving through before returning to base.
This experience takes place on the south coast of Iceland, in the transitional landscape between lowland farmland, glacial rivers and the outer edges of Þórsmörk. The area is well suited to buggy touring, with open terrain and a mix of surfaces that showcase how quickly the landscape changes over short distances.
The meeting point is Brú Base on Road 249, located around 3 km past Seljalandsfoss near Hvolsvöllur. The base is easily accessible by car. Pick-up and drop-off services are available from selected locations for an additional fee and must be arranged in advance.
No previous buggy or ATV experience is required, but participants should be comfortable being outdoors for several hours and following guide instructions. The tour is suitable for most people in fair general condition.
Drivers must be at least 18 years old and hold a full, valid driving licence. Learner permits, tractor licences and motorcycle licences are not accepted. This activity is not recommended for guests with serious back problems, heart conditions, or during pregnancy.
With roots stretching back to a single vehicle and local guiding, this operation has built decades of hands-on experience running tours in Iceland’s south coast and highland fringe. Routes are carefully chosen to balance accessibility with genuine off-road travel, allowing guests to see more without feeling rushed.
Guides are locals with detailed knowledge of the area and its conditions, many with Search and Rescue experience. This background informs how tours are planned and delivered, with a strong emphasis on safety, well-maintained vehicles and clear communication throughout the experience.
