Flying silently above the water completely changes the feel of kitesurfing, allowing riders to glide smoothly through chop and continue riding in lighter wind conditions. Created for experienced kiters wanting to move into hydrofoiling or refine advanced foil skills, these lessons in Tarifa combine structured coaching with ideal wind and water conditions for progression.
Two different course options are available depending on your current kitefoil experience, with coaching adapted to your progression level and riding goals. Radio headsets are used throughout the sessions, allowing instructors to guide you directly while riding on the water.
The Flight Foundation – 6 Hour Course
Built for confident twin-tip riders entering hydrofoiling for the first time, this course focuses on creating strong foil fundamentals over several sessions. Training begins with stable foil setups, controlled waterstarts, weight distribution, and learning how to taxi across the surface before progressing into your first sustained flights above the water. The aim is to build consistent “foil muscle memory” while making the transition into hydrofoiling feel controlled and manageable.
The Masterclass – 2 Hour Advanced Coaching
Designed for riders already capable of sustained foil riding, these advanced sessions focus on improving freeride flow, transitions, and high-performance control. Coaching can include jibes, tacks, foot switches, carving manoeuvres, speed management, and refining smoother riding techniques in different wind conditions around Tarifa.
Progression throughout both course options follows structured stages including groundwork and taxi control, first flights and lift management, sustained gliding and upwind efficiency, followed by advanced transitions and freeride performance as confidence improves.
Across the beaches of Tarifa, riders benefit from reliable wind conditions and large open riding areas that make the region one of Europe’s leading destinations for kitefoiling. Spots such as Los Lances and Valdevaqueros provide plenty of space for controlled progression away from crowded launch zones.
Beyond the water, Tarifa combines a relaxed surf atmosphere with beach cafés, equipment shops, and an active watersports community throughout the wind season. Daily meeting arrangements are normally organised around Agua Chiringuito depending on the forecast and chosen riding location.
Independent kitesurfing experience is required before starting kitefoil lessons. Riders should already feel comfortable riding upwind, managing power confidently, and controlling the kite safely in different wind strengths.
Hydrofoiling introduces a completely different balance point compared with twin-tip riding, so patience and consistency are important during the first stages while adapting to the foil’s lift and movement.
Rather than rushing students straight into unstable flights, lessons focus on building strong foil fundamentals step by step. Stable setups, structured coaching, and radio communication help riders progress steadily while reducing frustration during the learning process.
Updated hydrofoil equipment, rescue support, accident and liability insurance, plus Tarifa’s reliable wind conditions create an ideal environment for progressing into foil riding safely. Sessions are also adapted individually, allowing riders to focus on freeride cruising, transitions, or performance goals depending on their level.
No previous hydrofoil experience is needed for the Flight Foundation course. Riders only need to already be comfortable kitesurfing independently on a twin-tip board, including riding upwind and controlling power confidently in different wind conditions.
The beginner foil sessions are specifically designed to help experienced kiters transition gradually into hydrofoiling using stable equipment setups and progressive coaching. Instructors focus heavily on balance, control, and confidence during the first flights rather than rushing straight into advanced riding.
The Flight Foundation course is aimed at riders entering hydrofoiling for the first time. Sessions focus on understanding the foil, learning stable waterstarts, taxi riding, first controlled flights, and developing the muscle memory needed to maintain balance above the water.
The Masterclass is designed for riders who can already foil consistently in both directions. Coaching becomes more performance-focused, working on transitions, jibes, tacks, carving turns, speed control, and smoother freeride flow depending on the rider’s personal goals.
The first stages can feel unusual because the foil reacts very differently compared with a normal kiteboard. Small body movements create large changes in lift and balance, so most riders need time to adjust to the feeling of riding above the water rather than on the surface.
With structured coaching and the correct foil setup, progression usually becomes much smoother after the initial sessions. Many riders are surprised by how quickly controlled flights begin once they understand balance and foil control properly.
Tarifa offers consistent wind, large open beaches, and long riding areas that work well for hydrofoiling progression. Riders benefit from plenty of space on the water while learning, helping reduce the pressure that can come from more crowded foil locations.
The conditions also allow riders to maximise lighter wind days that may not suit traditional twin-tip kitesurfing. Hydrofoiling’s efficiency means many sessions are possible in winds as low as 8 knots, creating more opportunities to ride throughout a trip.
Sessions include the hydrofoil board, foil setup, wetsuit, harness, helmet, and radio headset system used for communication during the lesson. Equipment is selected according to the rider’s experience level and the expected wind conditions.
Beginner riders usually start with shorter masts and more stable foil wings to make the learning process more controlled. Advanced riders may use different setups depending on their riding goals and progression level.
Step 1 – Groundwork and Taxi Riding focuses on understanding the foil setup, balance, and weight distribution. Riders begin with controlled waterstarts and practise riding the board flat on the surface without fully lifting onto the foil, helping build confidence and stability before attempting sustained flights.
Step 2 – First Flights and Lift Control introduces controlled foil lift above the water. Coaching focuses on pitch control, stance alignment, and managing smooth take-offs while avoiding over-foiling or sudden crashes caused by too much lift.
Step 3 – Sustained Riding and Upwind Efficiency is where riders begin maintaining longer flights with more consistency and control. Sessions focus on stable riding height, smoother gliding, efficient kite movement, and learning how to ride stronger upwind angles using the foil’s efficiency rather than power alone.
Step 4 – Transitions and Performance Riding is designed for more advanced progression once riders feel comfortable foiling consistently. Coaching can include jibes, tacks, foot switches, carving turns, speed control, and refining smoother freeride flow in a range of wind conditions.
