Over nine days you'll explore the UNESCO-listed region of Upper Svaneti, acclimatise around the Koruldi Lakes and establish a summit camp beneath the Tetnuldi Glacier. Glacier travel and ridge climbing prepare you for the classic summit route to 4,858 metres.
You'll stay in comfortable guesthouses in Mestia and camp on the mountain with full support from the guiding team. A reserve day is built into the schedule so your guide can wait for the safest weather window before summit day.
Mount Tetnuldi is one of the most striking peaks in the Caucasus, rising above the valleys of Upper Svaneti with its distinctive pyramid-shaped summit. Located within one of Georgia's most scenic mountain regions, the mountain offers an exciting combination of glacier travel, ridge climbing and high-altitude mountaineering.
Over nine days, you'll acclimatise gradually through a combination of mountain hikes, glacier travel and camping beneath the mountain. The expedition culminates in a summit attempt along Tetnuldi's classic ridge route, rewarding climbers with far-reaching views across some of the highest peaks in the Greater Caucasus.
Led by experienced mountain professionals, this expedition combines careful acclimatisation, detailed planning and expert support throughout every stage of the climb. The route has been designed to help participants adapt gradually to the altitude while building confidence on mountain terrain before summit day.
Small guide ratios allow for personalised support and greater flexibility on the mountain. Combined with extensive local knowledge and a commitment to safety, the expedition provides an excellent opportunity to experience one of Georgia's most rewarding alpine climbs.
After arriving in either Tbilisi or Kutaisi, you'll transfer to Mestia, the cultural heart of Upper Svaneti. The journey passes through dramatic mountain scenery, reservoirs and deep valleys before arriving in a region famous for its medieval defensive towers and unique mountain traditions.
The following day begins with an acclimatisation hike around the Koruldi Lakes. Surrounded by glaciers and alpine peaks, this area provides spectacular views of Tetnuldi, Ushba and the surrounding Caucasus while helping your body begin adapting to higher elevations.
Using the local cable car system, you'll gain altitude before hiking to the summit camp at approximately 3,700 metres near the Tetnuldi Glacier. Surrounded by towering mountain walls and glacier scenery, this remote camp becomes your base for the next stage of the expedition.
An acclimatisation hike follows, taking you onto the glacier and up to around 4,100 metres. This provides a close look at the summit route while allowing your body to continue adapting to the altitude ahead of summit day.
Before sunrise, you'll begin the ascent towards the summit of Mount Tetnuldi. The route follows a combination of glacier terrain, rocky sections and a narrow snow ridge, providing a varied and rewarding mountaineering challenge.
After approximately eight hours of climbing, you'll reach the summit at 4,858 metres. The views stretch across the Greater Caucasus, including famous peaks such as Ushba, Elbrus and Shkhara before the descent back to camp.
A reserve day is included to allow flexibility in case weather conditions prevent the summit attempt from taking place as planned.
This additional day significantly improves the chances of finding a suitable weather window while maintaining a strong focus on safety and mountain conditions.
Following the climb, you'll descend back to Mestia and return to the comfort of your guesthouse. The afternoon can be spent exploring the town, visiting local museums or simply relaxing after the expedition.
The following day includes the transfer back to either Tbilisi or Kutaisi, with a final overnight stay before departing on Day 9 with memories of one of Georgia's most impressive mountain adventures.
Accommodation is provided throughout the expedition and includes guesthouse accommodation in Mestia together with camping at the summit camp beneath the Tetnuldi Glacier.
The guesthouse provides a comfortable base before and after the climb, while the mountain camp offers an authentic alpine experience surrounded by some of the most impressive scenery in the Caucasus.
Previous mountain experience is strongly recommended for this expedition due to the glacier travel, ridge climbing and high-altitude environment involved. Participants should be comfortable hiking in mountainous terrain and spending multiple days outdoors.
Experience using crampons and an ice axe is helpful, although guides will provide support and instruction throughout the expedition where required.
Mount Tetnuldi is considered a challenging alpine objective and includes glacier crossings, rocky sections and exposed ridge terrain. Good fitness and confidence in mountain environments are important for success.
The route requires endurance, sure-footed movement and the ability to cope with changing mountain conditions. Proper acclimatisation plays a key role in preparing for summit day.
The expedition is generally suitable for participants aged 18 and over due to the technical terrain and physical demands involved.
If younger participants wish to join, please send a request before booking. Experience, fitness and previous mountaineering background can then be reviewed individually.
Upper Svaneti is famous for its mountain scenery, medieval stone towers and unique cultural heritage. The region has been recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its historical significance and traditional mountain communities.
Visitors often consider Svaneti one of the most impressive regions in Georgia, combining dramatic landscapes with a rich history that has remained largely unchanged for centuries.
The summit route follows a combination of glacier terrain, rocky ridges and snow-covered sections. Climbers progress steadily towards the summit while enjoying increasingly expansive views across the surrounding peaks.
The final sections involve a narrow snow ridge that provides one of the most memorable parts of the ascent before reaching the summit plateau.
Mountain weather can change rapidly, particularly in the Caucasus. Wind, snow and poor visibility may affect summit plans and require adjustments to the itinerary.
To provide greater flexibility, a reserve day has been included within the programme. This allows guides to choose the safest and most suitable weather window for the summit attempt.
Yes, specialist mountaineering insurance is required for all participants. The policy should include cover for alpine climbing, emergency evacuation and medical treatment.
Participants should ensure their insurance specifically covers the altitude and activities included within the expedition before travelling.
Accommodation combines guesthouse stays in Mestia with camping at the summit camp beneath Tetnuldi. This allows participants to experience both local hospitality and life in the mountains.
Camping beneath the glacier provides a memorable alpine experience while positioning the team perfectly for acclimatisation hikes and the summit attempt.
A strong level of cardiovascular fitness and leg strength is essential for summit day, which involves approximately eight hours of climbing on glacier and ridge terrain. Training with a loaded pack on hills in the months before departure is highly recommended.
The acclimatisation hikes around Koruldi Lakes and on the Tetnuldi Glacier help your body adapt gradually, but arriving fit gives you the best chance of success.
The expedition begins with a transfer from either Tbilisi or Kutaisi to Mestia, the cultural heart of Upper Svaneti. Full arrival details and meeting instructions are confirmed after booking.
Scenic airport pickups are included in the expedition price. If you are already in Georgia, alternative meeting arrangements can be discussed in advance.
