Overview

The Greater Caucasus is Georgia's high northern wall — a 300-kilometre chain of glaciated 5,000 m peaks, medieval watchtower villages and roadless valleys strung along the Russian border. This is the country's adventure heartland, where a single region holds North Africa-beating summits, one of Europe's finest treks and a genuine winter freeride scene, all wrapped in the fierce, hospitable mountain culture of the Svans and Khevsurs.

Trekking and climbing

The classic is the four-day Mestia-to-Ushguli trek through Upper Svaneti, but the range runs from gentle valley walks to serious mountaineering on Mount Kazbek (5,054 m) above Mtskheta-Mtianeti and the glaciated spires of Ushba, Tetnuldi and Shkhara in Svaneti. Quieter Racha adds forested lakes and mineral springs.

Winter in the high mountains

From December the same slopes become a skiing and freeride playground — lift-served powder and open bowls at Gudauri, and backcountry touring straight from the tower villages of Mestia. FAQs

The four-day Mestia-to-Ushguli traverse through Upper Svaneti is the signature route, passing stone tower villages beneath Georgia's highest peaks. Kazbegi's Gergeti and Juta trails and the Truso valley are superb shorter options.

June to September for trekking and climbing, with the high passes fully clear from July. December to March is the ski and freeride season above Gudauri and Mestia.

Not for the trekking — the classic routes suit fit walkers and there are beginner-friendly options with guides. Kazbek asks for fitness and basic glacier skills taught en route, while Ushba and Tetnuldi are for experienced alpinists.

Kazbegi (Stepantsminda) is around three hours from Tbilisi on the Georgian Military Road; Mestia in Svaneti is reached by road or short flight from the west. Operators arrange transfers — check each course's meeting point.
