Over eight days you'll progress from arrival in Zermatt through a series of acclimatisation climbs and technical training sessions on rock, snow and ice. Each stage builds your confidence and fitness ahead of the summit attempt on the Hörnli Ridge.
You'll stay in comfortable hotels and legendary alpine huts, including the Hörnli Hut directly beneath the Matterhorn. A reserve day is built into the schedule so your guide can choose the safest weather window for summit day.
The Matterhorn is one of the most recognisable mountains in the world and a long-standing ambition for many mountaineers. Rising to 4,478 metres above the Swiss Alps, its distinctive pyramid shape has become synonymous with alpine climbing and continues to attract climbers from around the globe.
This 8-day expedition combines acclimatisation ascents, technical training and guided climbing to prepare you for a summit attempt via the famous Hörnli Ridge. Throughout the week, you'll develop essential movement skills on rock, snow and ice while exploring some of the Alps' most impressive peaks before tackling the main objective.
This expedition is led by experienced mountain professionals with extensive knowledge of alpine climbing, glacier travel and high-altitude mountaineering. The itinerary has been carefully designed to balance technical preparation, acclimatisation and recovery, giving participants the best possible foundation for a successful summit attempt.
Operating with a private guide ratio allows for personalised coaching and route management throughout the expedition. Combined with detailed planning, quality accommodation and a strong focus on safety, every aspect of the trip is designed to help you perform at your best in the mountains.
Upon arrival in Geneva, you'll meet your guide and travel to the famous alpine resort of Zermatt. Surrounded by some of the highest peaks in the Alps, Zermatt serves as the base for the expedition.
After checking into your accommodation, you'll review equipment, discuss the itinerary and enjoy a welcome dinner while preparing for the week ahead.
The expedition begins with an acclimatisation ascent accessed via the highest underground funicular railway in the world. By midday, you'll reach the summit of Index Peak while beginning to adapt to the alpine environment.
The afternoon focuses on practical rock climbing skills, including rope work, movement techniques and route management skills that will prove valuable on the Matterhorn.
Today's objective is Dent du Géant, a striking 4,013m peak positioned between the Mont Blanc and Grandes Jorasses massifs. Widely regarded as one of the Alps' most distinctive mountains, it provides excellent acclimatisation and technical preparation.
Throughout the climb, you'll refine movement on snow and ice while gaining valuable experience at higher altitude. Overnight accommodation is provided at the Torino Hut at 3,371 metres.
An early start sees you tackle the traverse of Aiguille d'Entrèves on the French-Italian border. This elegant ridge route provides an excellent opportunity to develop confidence on exposed alpine terrain.
The route involves moving along narrow ridgelines while practising efficient movement and rope management. After completing the traverse, you'll descend and return to Zermatt.
Attention now turns fully towards the Matterhorn. Using the mountain lift system, you'll travel higher into the mountains before hiking to the historic Hörnli Hut.
Located directly on the Hörnli Ridge, the hut has welcomed climbers for generations and provides the ideal base for the summit attempt. The remainder of the day is spent resting, preparing equipment and reviewing the route.
Before dawn, you'll begin the ascent of the Matterhorn. The route involves exposed rock scrambling, fixed ropes, sections of snow and continuous ridge climbing as you work your way towards the summit.
Standing on the summit of the Matterhorn is a major mountaineering achievement and rewards climbers with views across Switzerland and Italy. Following the summit, you'll descend back to Zermatt and celebrate the achievement over a farewell dinner.
This day remains available should weather conditions require adjustments to the summit schedule. Additional acclimatisation or training activities may also take place if conditions allow.
Including a reserve day significantly improves flexibility and increases the chances of a successful summit attempt.
After breakfast, you'll transfer back to Geneva Airport for your onward journey.
The expedition concludes after eight days of alpine climbing, technical training and unforgettable mountain experiences.
Accommodation is provided throughout the expedition and includes hotel stays in Zermatt alongside overnight accommodation in mountain huts. These alpine huts offer direct access to the climbing routes while allowing participants to experience traditional mountain hospitality.
One of the highlights is the overnight stay at the historic Hörnli Hut, located directly beneath the Matterhorn. This legendary refuge has served climbers for generations and places you in the ideal position for the summit attempt.
Yes, previous mountaineering experience is strongly recommended for this expedition. The Matterhorn is not considered a beginner mountain and requires confidence moving on exposed alpine terrain.
Participants should ideally have experience using crampons, ice axes and basic rope systems, as well as experience hiking and climbing in mountainous environments.
The Matterhorn is considered one of the more challenging classic alpine climbs due to its exposure, sustained scrambling and long summit day. Although highly sought after, it requires strong physical fitness and mental focus.
The route involves steep rock sections, fixed ropes and periods of continuous movement where concentration is essential. Weather and conditions can also significantly influence the difficulty.
The expedition is generally suitable for participants aged 18 and over due to the technical nature of the climbing and the physical demands involved.
If younger participants wish to join, please send a request before booking. Experience, fitness and previous mountaineering background will be considered on an individual basis.
The acclimatisation climbs allow your body to gradually adapt to higher altitudes before attempting the Matterhorn. They also provide an opportunity to practise key mountaineering techniques in real alpine environments.
By combining training with acclimatisation, participants arrive at the summit attempt feeling more prepared both physically and technically.
Mountain weather can change rapidly, particularly at higher elevations. Wind, snow or storms may require adjustments to the itinerary or summit schedule.
A reserve day has been included specifically to improve flexibility and provide alternative opportunities should conditions not be suitable on the original summit day.
Accommodation combines comfortable hotel stays in Zermatt with traditional alpine mountain huts. Facilities vary depending on location, with mountain huts providing a more authentic mountaineering experience.
While mountain accommodation is simpler than hotels, it offers excellent access to the climbing routes and allows participants to fully immerse themselves in the alpine environment.
Yes, specialist mountaineering insurance is required for all participants. This should include alpine climbing activities, emergency evacuation and medical treatment.
It is important to verify that your policy covers the specific altitude and technical nature of the Matterhorn route before travelling.
A high level of cardiovascular fitness and leg strength is essential for this expedition. Summit day alone involves many hours of continuous climbing on exposed terrain at altitude.
Training should include regular hill walking with a loaded pack, stair climbing and endurance exercise in the months before departure. The fitter you arrive, the more you can focus on technique and enjoy the experience.
Group safety equipment including ropes, anchors and shared climbing gear is provided as part of the expedition. Your guide will also carry emergency and navigation equipment throughout the trip.
Personal mountaineering equipment such as boots, harness, helmet, crampons and ice axe must be brought by each participant or rented locally in Zermatt during the equipment check on arrival.
The expedition begins with a meeting at Geneva Airport, where your guide will collect the group for the transfer to Zermatt. Full arrival details and meeting instructions are confirmed after booking.
If you are already in Switzerland, alternative meeting arrangements can be discussed in advance. Transport from Geneva to Zermatt and return at the end of the trip is included in the expedition price.
