Upper Svaneti is one of the most distinctive mountain regions in the Caucasus, combining reliable winter snowfall with a rich cultural heritage that stretches back thousands of years. Surrounded by glaciers, towering peaks and historic stone towers, the region provides an outstanding setting for ski touring and freeride adventures.
Over eight days, you'll experience a mix of avalanche training, guided backcountry skiing and cultural discovery. Based in the mountain town of Mestia, the trip combines access to renowned ski areas with remote touring routes that showcase some of Georgia's finest winter terrain.
After arriving in Tbilisi or Kutaisi, you'll transfer into the mountains to Mestia, the heart of Upper Svaneti. Days 2 and 3 combine avalanche training with tours around Tetnuldi and Hatsvali, building safety skills while riding powder beneath the Caucasus peaks.
Days 4 to 6 venture deeper into surrounding valleys with forest descents, alpine terrain and visits to traditional Svan villages. A final morning tour on Day 7 precedes the return to Tbilisi or Kutaisi, with airport departure on Day 8 after breakfast.
Guides with extensive experience in the Caucasus carefully select routes according to snow conditions, weather forecasts and group ability. This flexible approach helps maximise both safety and skiing quality throughout the week.
The trip also provides an opportunity to experience the traditions of Svaneti alongside the skiing. By combining mountain adventures with local culture, traditional cuisine and historic villages, the experience offers far more than simply time on the snow.
Following arrival in either Tbilisi or Kutaisi, you'll travel into the mountains towards Mestia, the heart of Upper Svaneti. The route passes reservoirs, dramatic valleys and snow-covered peaks before reaching this historic mountain town at approximately 1,500 metres above sea level.
After checking into your accommodation, you'll enjoy a traditional Georgian dinner before meeting the guides for an equipment check, trip briefing and an introduction to the week ahead.
The first two days focus on developing mountain safety knowledge and becoming familiar with local conditions. Avalanche awareness sessions cover rescue equipment, safe travel techniques and essential backcountry skills.
Once training is complete, attention turns to skiing. Routes around Tetnuldi and Hatsvali offer excellent opportunities to enjoy powder snow while taking in views of some of the highest mountains in Georgia.
The next stage of the trip takes you deeper into the surrounding mountains. Depending on conditions, daily routes may include open alpine terrain, forest descents and quieter valleys beyond the main ski areas.
Along the way, you'll encounter traditional Svan settlements, historic architecture and impressive mountain scenery that helps make this region one of the most unique ski touring destinations in Europe.
Your final morning in the mountains includes one last guided ski tour before departing Svaneti.
Later, you'll return to either Tbilisi or Kutaisi, where a farewell dinner provides the perfect opportunity to reflect on the week's adventures and enjoy one final evening in Georgia.
Following breakfast at your hotel, you'll transfer to the airport for your onward flight home. Your guides coordinate departure timing based on your flight schedule, giving you a comfortable final morning after a week of skiing in the Caucasus.
