This route climbs the southern side of Kilimanjaro, starting with a night in Arusha before a short drive to Machame Gate. The trail moves steadily through rainforest, moorland and alpine desert, gaining altitude by day and dropping back down to sleep, a pattern that supports acclimatisation.
The final stretch brings an overnight summit push to Uhuru Peak followed by a two day descent through Mweka Gate. A full day by day breakdown of camps and trekking times is set out below.
Meals are planned around the physical demands of trekking, and porters carry the group's camping and cooking equipment throughout, leaving climbers to focus on pacing themselves.
Climbs on the Machame route begin and end in Arusha, with the trailhead itself a short drive away at Machame Gate on the mountain's southern flank. The lower slopes here are covered in dense, often damp rainforest, giving way to heath and moorland as the trail climbs higher.
Because Machame is one of the most established routes on the mountain, camps along the way are well set up and the paths clearly marked, even where sections get muddy underfoot. Arusha itself remains a comfortable base before and after the climb, with plenty of hotels and restaurants nearby.
No technical climbing ability is required, since the Machame route is a walking trail from Machame Gate to the summit, though a good level of fitness makes the long trekking days noticeably more comfortable. Regular hill walking, running or similar training in the months before departure is the best preparation.
A pre trip medical check is a sensible precaution, particularly for anyone with heart, lung or blood pressure conditions, since the altitude gained each day places real strain on the body. Guides monitor climbers daily and carry oxygen, but a steady pace and honesty about symptoms remain the best safeguards.
Guides on this route know the southern side of Kilimanjaro well and use the trek high, sleep low pattern to give climbers the best possible chance of a successful summit. Private toilet tents and meals planned around the demands of trekking are provided throughout the climb.
Porters carry the group's camping and cooking equipment, and a personal porter can be hired separately for anyone who wants extra help with their own daypack. Machame is also a popular choice for group and charity treks, and the guiding team is well practised at running the route for larger parties as well as smaller groups.
