Location

Fraoch Lodge is based in Boat of Garten, a quiet village in the Cairngorms National Park. Just ten minutes from Aviemore, it’s a great location for accessing both the local mountains and more remote areas like Fisherfield. The surrounding forest and hills are rich in wildlife, and the village has local shops, a café, and excellent rail links.

The walk-in starts from Dundonnell in Wester Ross, leading into the Fisherfield Forest—one of the most remote parts of mainland Scotland. With no road access, reaching this area on foot makes the experience all the more rewarding.

Accommodation

Before and after the expedition, guests stay at a comfortable walker-friendly lodge with shared bathrooms, drying facilities, and a wood-burning stove. Bedrooms are simple and cosy, with towels and bedding provided.

During the expedition, accommodation is in tents at a remote wild campsite. Tents and cooking equipment are supplied, and meals are prepared together in camp. It’s a chance to switch off, live simply, and wake up surrounded by mountains.

Prerequisites

This trip is suitable for those with previous mountain hiking experience and a good level of fitness. You’ll need to carry a rucksack with overnight kit and be prepared for rough ground, variable weather, and river crossings.

The pace is steady but expect long, challenging days in remote terrain. Wild camping experience is helpful but not essential, as full support is provided.

FAQs:

Which airport should I fly to?

The closest airport is Inverness, which has a growing number of UK domestic flights. Travellers are encouraged to check the airport’s website for current routes and airlines.

Once flight details are confirmed, guests can provide their arrival information so arrangements can be made for collection. Return transfers to the airport are also available.

Is accommodation included?

Yes, accommodation is always included in the price of all courses and holidays.

Stays are on a full board basis with all meals provided, including home-baked bread.

Are there any hidden costs?

There are no hidden expenses.

The only money guests may need is for personal items, such as a forgotten bit of kit, or for buying drinks like alcohol either to enjoy with dinner or at a local pub if the group decides to go out.

What happens if not many people book?

Because all elements of the holidays are run in-house, trips aren’t dependent on hitting high numbers to be viable. Once a booking is confirmed and payment is received, the trip goes ahead.

If the itinerary originally involves a location away from base and becomes impractical, alternative plans such as a revised base or Tentipi accommodation may be offered—always with a discussion beforehand to ensure guests are happy.

When is the best time to come?

Scotland’s weather varies by region, and many trips take place in the Cairngorms, which are drier than the west coast. West coast trips are scheduled for the times of year when that region is typically more settled. Statistically, May has the best sunshine, followed by September.

April, July and August also tend to bring favourable conditions. Thanks to expert local knowledge and flexibility in daily plans, guides can often choose routes based on real-time weather conditions, giving guests the best possible experience.

What are Munros and why are they significant?

Munros are mountains in Scotland that rise above 3,000 feet (914.4 metres). They are named after Sir Hugh Munro, who first compiled a list of these mountains in the late 19th century.

Completing a "round" of Munros is a popular challenge for experienced hillwalkers, and it involves climbing each mountain in the Munro list, which currently includes over 280 peaks. Munro bagging is seen as a prestigious goal for those passionate about hiking in Scotland’s Highlands.

Are midges a problem?

Midges can appear from mid-June to early September but are rarely an issue. They prefer still, damp air and boggy terrain—which is less common in the Cairngorms.

West coast trips are scheduled to avoid peak midge season. When necessary, guides carry effective repellent such as Avon Skin-So-Soft, known locally as the go-to defence.

What sort of people come on these holidays?

People from all walks of life join the holidays and courses—from post workers to professionals and everyone in between. The mountains tend to bring people together on equal footing, and shared experiences often lead to good conversations and new friendships.

Ages vary, but the most common range is between 30 and 55.

Will I be fit enough?

Each trip is graded for difficulty. If guests are unsure about their suitability, it’s best to speak directly with a guide or instructor via the adventuro chat below before booking.

That way, the right course or holiday can be recommended based on fitness level and experience.

I have a food allergy—will this be a problem?

Not at all. All meals are home-cooked and tailored to individual needs.

Because the food is prepared in-house, it's easy to accommodate special diets. Many guests have commented on the care and attention put into ensuring they feel safe and well-fed during their stay.

Is there a support vehicle during the expedition?

No, the Fisherfield Munros expedition is a fully self-sufficient trip. The group will carry all necessary camping gear during the walk-in to the campsite, and there is no vehicle support once the hike begins.

This adds to the challenge and adventure of the experience. However, a transfer to and from the start and finish points will be provided by the guide, ensuring your journey begins and ends smoothly.
